William Nylander

So, after recording 15 points in 13 games, and being directly responsible for multiple goals against - including the back-breaking OT goal that ended up costing the Leafs the 2nd round series and likely a trip to the Stanley Cup, the overall contribution was barely a positive one.

I think it's a bit of a wee stretch to blame Willy for the series loss based on what happened in game 3. Especially when some of the team's other so called stars barely landed a shot on Bobrovsky during the final three games of the series.

Expectations should be greater for the second highest paid player but for some reason the bar is always set lower for Nylander
Probably has something to do with the fact that he was paid 7mil up until this season. If anything, it was unfair to hold him to the same expectations as the other overpaid stars in our core 4 in previous years, but people still did it.

I would've preferred to have signed Nylander at 9-10 mil, but Dubas set the tone when he signed Marner to 11, and Treliving gambled when Nylander reportedly asked for 10x8 in the pre-season, and he ended up having the best season of his career which made it possible for him to ask for 11.5x8.

Nylander gets held up to a McDavid standard while Marner gets held to Max Domi standard in the playoffs. Matthews is even come down hard on but not Prince Mitch

With Marner gone, the PP will run through Nylander. I think he has another level to reach in his game as the go to guy rather than always being second fiddle to Marner.

He looks wasted and unmotivated always being relegated to the 2nd line.. It could be a huge boon to revamp the 2nd and 3rd line with guys who are better suited to be there.

It’s unrealistic to expect a player at his salary to score more than a point a game?
Does that make players scoring more and making less overachievers?
Led the team in GOALS while being 2nd in the LEAGUE.
LED the team in GOALS AND POINTS in the playoffs.

Thats my expectation of someone making 11.5mil and pretty sure almost all hockey fans will accept that too.

Like I said earlier.

You do you.

There is a major flaw with this train of thought when it comes to the playoffs.

If you win 16 games with a combined score of 16-0, and your best players literally do nothing but nullify the other team's best players, then they have done their job for you.

The playoffs are about the end game result - full stop.

If a player scores 7 goals in a 7 game series and the team loses in the first round, then guess what - the team is out. Ask Mackinnon how he's enjoying these playoffs after demolishing the scoring over that first round.

If your best offensive player is also directly responsible for the same number of goals against as he is goals for, he has done nothing for your team other than burn time on the clock.

Willy has the tools and ability to completely dominate games offensively. And in these playoffs he did just that a few times.
He has the ability and the tools to be a very strong player in the physical department. He has spent his entire career purposely avoiding that aspect of the game.
He has the ability and the tools to be a good defensive player. He shows no interest in that aspect of the game.

For the 2nd highest player on the team, that's straight unacceptable. Especially the 2nd highest paid player on the team who plays completely sheltered minutes away from the other teams' best defensive players.
It’s been stated several times that Floridas shutdown line faced both the 1st and 2nd line. Nylander led the team in points that series. He did his job.

If the first line holds even against the other teams shutdown line, it’s a loss for the team. As a scoring line, you are meant to score. Not letting the other teams shutdown line score is not the objective.

maybe but doubt it . Nylanders not a play maker as a rule . He can make passes but quarterbacking everything doesn't seem his forte . He's more the trigger man .
Not sure what they'll do regarding a quarterback . Maybe Reilly if he's not traded or possibly Domi .

Over the last 8 years, most of which he was the 4th highest paid player, he was second in goals, second in game winning goals, second is assists (forwards), and third in points.

In the one season where he was actually the second highest paid, he led the team in goals and game winning goals, and was second in points.

If the bar was set lower, it was because he was playing on the second line with weaker linemates. Despite that, he cleared the bar easily.

Don’t listen to that nut no matter what the stats are he’s gonna try to tell us marner is a better player even though he gets catered to and still produces similar results

He doesn’t make something out of nothing as much as Marner but he consistently gets pucks flat on sticks in scoring areas. Having someone that can shoot and pass will open up a lot more lanes than someone who can only pass.

Maby Nylander finaly get more ice time. Said it so many times. It is in his DNA to play as much as possible. He gets better with more ice time. He needs at least mccabe a fast c and a great stretch passing D. Right now he has non of that.
