William Nylander

When Matty laid da soft pass up da middle to create da 2 on 1 Willy saw d play from where he was on ice .. I could see his face drop from my seats .. he had a choice to make it that moment .. and he made da wrong choice for da team .. he could have raced back/dove and taken shot/pass away from Sens Cozens .. but no he pouted and skated back at normal speed .. this is exactly da type of decisions a Cup contender doesn't make .. Willy had da ability to do it but chose not to .. this core group will never be a TEAM .. Willy thinks he is far better then Mitch and Matty and lacks heart .. Matty doesn't care and is slow .. and Mitch does not have da straight away speed to play playoff hockey .. these guys all have critical FAIL components to their games

Another overpaid bum like 16 and 34

First he underproduces in the regular season but his fanboys here give him a pass b/c of his goals

Now come playoffs he has 6 in 5 but only 1 goal (for the goals crowd) and is not producing enough and people still defend him.

Just b/c he's the best usually of 16, 34, and him come playoffs doesn't mean he is close to delivering the value we need.

Willy talks about how much he wants to win but doesn’t show it. I don’t see that desperate level of playoff hockey.
Yep, the give a shit meter was a little low last night.

Careful, I mentioned yesterday that they need more goals from him and people lost their minds.

Well, isn’t that the case for your whole core then? At least Nylander created two goals out of nothing in game 5 which forced OT - what did the first line, except Knies, do? I don’t see you in Matthews and Marner’s thread spewing this nonsense, so it’s quite obvious what you’re trying to do?
You mean in game 4. He was oretty good game 4.

Game 5 he and the rest of the squad were shutout

Not this year.
I think in kind with Marner but above Matthews.

Matthews should be - should be - a horse given his size and skill and situation. Nothing about his play conveys a want to battle.

It looks like the first goal was a screen but worse, like he was afraid to get hit by the puck and moved at the last second.

And if he’s injured, his sense of self-preservation is going to be that much more heightened.

That is the never ending false narrative from Leafs fans but it isn’t true.

He’s a liability defensively while they are both well above average, and they have both out produced him offensively over their careers.
No, the narrative that’s stretched is the appeal to “Leafs fans”.

What Nylander seems to have been is less a liability offensively. I think his engagement is highly underrated. And his playoffs performance over the last five years, better than Matthews and Marner.

What’s overrated is this tired idea that Matthews is unassailably superior. His role and his role alone has undermined our trajectory. He is the defacto 1C and now the C and in 14 games to clinch a second round opportunity, he’s lead us where PRECISELY?

The common denominator of our inability to proceed, according to position, contract and deferred to leadership is Auston Matthews confusing and constant disappearing act.

I get McDavid’s characterization in a different light. Even if Marner is a perimeter player, he can make the pass to the 1C that’s supposed to attack the net. McDavid does it. Matthews doesn’t.

That’s not Nylander’s expected role. And the way teams work, you can bet you’re bottom dollar in the club and those who get a look at the comfortable apathy from deadline acquisitions, see enough and decide they can’t follow a leader who can’t lead because it appears that he’s not willing to pay the price.

Nylander's stats by each game in the playoffs

It looks like they were 1:30 into the power play already. Not easy to catch a guy who can actually skate from behind at that point. The optics didn’t look good, but he looked gassed
I don't suppose there's any value in pointing out that Matty made the bad pass and Mitch doesn’t have a clue about playing a 2-on-1?

All four goals were exclusively Willy's fault.
