When you consider that Nylander has about twice as many goals and plays with Matthews less often, I'd say it's about a wash between them offensively this season.

I do think Marner is better defensively, but he hasn't been that impressive in general lately. Was playing great hockey earlier in the year.

Struggling no doubt, looks to be banged up a bit. Hopefully he’s healthy by the time the season ends.

There are a few factors here - TOI for Marner is definitely a factor and while the odds of scoring short handed are not high, it's not 0% either. It also helps you stay engaged in the game vs sitting 2 minutes at a time.

Matthews is better than JT, most years although he's been hurt this year.

Biggest difference would be on LW where Knies has been most of the year and the 2nd line LW has been a revolving door of misfits, McMann has been the best fit but he can be hot/cold.

I'd say they're fairly equal but Marner gets more TOI / higher quality linemates but Marner is stronger defensively.

He’s been similar to last years nylander for me

Through 35 games both were our entire team and through 50-60ish games they were still elite. Nylander really hit a wall and fell off after game 68 vs the oilers I think with 5 points the rest of the way

Marner since 4 nations hasn’t been that level, but he’s been a step or two below what he was before the break

I think Willie is great at taking away and hounding for pucks in the Ozone and Neutral Zone. He does seem to have his struggles in positioning in the Dzone when his line is being hemmed in the Dzone. But with Carlo, McCabe, and Tanev, that should help with that.

I knew what you meant. My comments were more of a general nature, because most of the criticism of him seems to be about his defensive play.

Another typical example is if he's covering the point and the winger scores he's out if position, and if he collapses to help the D and the point scores, he's out of position (and if he just steps on the ice and can't join the play in time he's out of position and lazy).

I've even seen him blamed for a goal when he wasn't on the ice (or had just left it).

One poster's favourite excuse for his production is that he doesn't face top competition. Then he complains that he scores very few goals against top competition.

He signed 6 years the first time. Marner wanted 8 but Dubas insisted on 6.
Marner hasn't had the opportunity to sign for 8 yet, that will be this summer.

Fast forward to the end of that deal, instead of dragging it out like he did the prior time, Willy put his words into action and signed a max term deal with little noise and distraction. A clear sign of maturity and putting his money where his mouth is. Willy said he wanted to be a Leaf, and he didn't p***y foot around making that a reality.

Meanwhile, we have Mitch doing the same old shit he constantly has done his entire tenure. what an honor, it is my dream, It is a privilege to be a Leaf, I want to stay here long term...etc. Why does he feel the need to drag this all the way to July 1 then? Not sure what Marners motivation is and I don't agree with it but lots of players prefer not to sign during the season, while others have no issue with it.
I wouldn't classify either as mature nor immature, they are just doing what they feel is right for themselves in their situation.

This guy is a beast. Never gets flustered, plays his game, and is second in the rocket race and pacing to finish top 10 in the league scoring wise. Hope he hits 50! I remember watching him score a hatty for the Marlies way back, you could always tell the immense talent this guy possessed.

Nylander was fairly paid at the time. He was deserving of a 7m contract but Pasta was better and in that range. The rumoured Marner deal of 8.5m was also fair at the time but Dubas screwed up. Matthews was also a bit of an overpay but less because he was scoring at a good clip right off the hop.

Bottom line. Rookie GM shits the bed and the fans pay the price literally and figuratively.

I think even at 10.9m today for the whole package of what he brings playoff weighted is a slight overpay.

Don't disagree with anything here.

One was overpaid and one was close to being correct.
Should have been about $1.5mm difference.
That's take into account the dependencies each have on others to produce.
