Nylander and Auston Matthews scored twice, as the Maple Leafs upended the Devils in Sheldon Keefe’s homecoming. Devils captain Nico Hischier scored twice on the power play, while Jack Hughes added a single to open the scoring.

“He doesn’t really change, I think he’s the same person through and through,” Matthews said of Nylander post-game. “The attitude stays the same. He’s going to do his thing out there, and he’s not really going to let any outside noise bother him, that’s something we really appreciate.”

Matthews was sensational in the third period, scoring two goals that almost ripped through the top corner of the net, bringing a Scotiabank Arena crowd back to life.

“He led the way. I thought that he was dialed in, he was working, shooting, attacking, doing a lot of good things, we need that from our leader,” Maple Leafs head coach Craig Berube said of Matthews post-game.

Matthws received the belt for his efforts — it has been retrieved, after Morgan Rielly figuratively presented it to Connor Dewar after Toronto’s victory over the Philadelphia Flyers on January 7.

They have their stars locked up around $9m, a solid goaltending tandem, I believe plenty of cap space and tradeable assets. If Tom Fitz goes for it, and makes the right moves, they could go to the SCF. Imagine Keefe taking the Devils to the SCF in his first year. I don't want to think about them winning it.

Try and take it with the humour intended.
I know humour isn't second nature to some ... bots have a hard time with it as well.

When asked after the game how he seems to score so many goals on breakaways, Nylander joked:

"I don't know, I don't get a lot of good passes."
“I think we gained our momentum,” Nylander said. “We had a lot of hard work and that started paying off, started getting more high-quality scoring chances so just try to build off that. I just saw an opening and he just put it right there and I was able to walk in.”

You may want to tell his teammates, ;)

If Willie is on 2nd line, means he is playing against lesser opposition. Not to mention 2nd highest paid player of the top 10 goal scores.
It has been shown that quality of linemates (including defence) has a greater impact than quality of opponents.

Of course, between home and away line matching, changing on the fly, icing, and different styles (not every coach line matches the same way), the idea of 'playing against lesser opposition' is not the constant that some would have you believe.

Well they can't cover both scorers with the same line right?

So either they cover Matthews or they cover Nylander.

Everyone else are just support players.
Not with the same line obviously (assuming no icining and always simultaneous changes), but who do you match to their top line: your top line or your checking/shutdown line? Some coaches do one, some the other.

This is why quality of linemates (and D) is more relevant than quality of opponents.

Don't the Leafs always have last change and that's why Matthews only plays against the best and everyone else on the team play against depth defenders?

Nylander had 7 shots on goal, His fellow winger 5. I would keep that line for a while.
I swear, McMann and Knies both work well with with Nylander. Yet he get's coaching ghosted. Pats and Tavares should be dropped to the 3rd line.

I don't like Domi as a C for Nylander, but it's better than Tavares by a mile for Nylander.

Defensively with Domi and Nylander it's tough, but McMann is pretty good defensively.

Every year, I ask for a C for Nylander that isn't the albatross that is Tavares synergy with him.
