William Nylander

A lot of stars like Nylander make their line mates better. I don’t think Nylander is that type

He is so talented but very unique. He can be so frustrating and terrible defensively and then score an amazing goal and change a game

Right he is not a complete star player but he is a damn good star goal scoring player who happens to be clutch. That means a lot to any team going for a title.

Marner consistently does not perform in big games. That's why he didn't get his asking price and we are here. Team wants to win not pay for eye candy play making.

Weird. Those were the exact sentiments about Michael Nylander

Just keep reading false info how Nyander was facing the top line all the time when he wasn't . Arguably the top D pair which does mean a lot but not the top defensive forward line . End of the day , no line had " easy" match ups .
That’s not how it sounded the first 3 games. Remember lots of posters calling out the 2nd lines success and that it only came vs “lesser” defensive units

Keep it simple.

Helps win in playoffs yes or no.

WN. Yes
AM. Yes
Knies. Yes
JT. Yes and no
MM. Yes and no

If yes and no what are the caveats?

JT could not keep up with FL at times when it got intense.

MM could not keep up with FL at times when it got intense and gave the puck up a lot as well.

So what can be done and who is available and are they perceived to be better than the devils we know?

That's the logical approach

What kind of player would be a good fit for Nylander?

I guess someone that can find him for those breakaways and dig pucks out of the corners so Nylander can cycle and dangle

Also someone with speed that can get those dumpins like Florida does

Who do you guys think ?

Perhaps a Top 6 forward?

Players who aren't top 6 forwards:
Paccioretty
McMann
Robertson
Jarnkrok
Holmberg
Minten

Times were posted in Nylander thread.

Berube played Matthews against Barkov line 1st. two games.
Maurice played Barkov line against Nylander line 3rd. and 4th. game.
Then Barkov went back against Matthews line, but less time per game, when the Leafs were already broken.

I disagree, but not vehemently.

Nylander is a very good passer, better than some give him credit for, but he doesn't have the defensive zone drive.

If someone can skate with Nylander he can get them the puck, at speed and on target. Trouble might be that player is likely deeper in the d-zone and would need to catch up.

He seemed ok with how the season ended, they made a good step and have grown.
Doesn’t hate losing. He’s got great skill but zero heart or leadership. Since he had risen to the occasion more so than his teammates in prior playoff series, I was surprised how quickly he disappeared against the Panthers this year. The truth is he plays hard when it’s convenient for him and is afraid to engage physically. Can’t win with that from your highest paid players and leadership group. They need to bring in those type of players and continue to develop that with players like Knies because without it they’ll never beat a team like the Panthers.

He also thought Jarnkrok was the deadline add that would put Calgary over the top. Other than a big defense I don’t really see much of a consistent “Treliving style” up front.
Tough to do that when more than 50% of their cap was tied up in four forwards. With Marner likely walking and a rising salary cap now will be the time to address the forward group.

That’s why I was asking who. Who is out there to target? Someone that will go into the corners and get pucks and win battles

You know he was a -1 in that series against their best pretty much. That's good, maybe it didn't look great to you in it's representation but he did really well lol
To be fair. He kinda disappeared. Line mates weren’t ideal but he got pushed out of the series just like his other highly paid teammates did.

I would feel more comfortable conceding that if Berube put Domi AM MM and Knies JT WN.

Nylander Sr. Could be frustratingly inconsistent but the dude topped out at 26 goals playing next to prime Jagr, so at no time was he ever a game breaker.

Kind of funny, that based on not living in poverty (yeah right) versus living the life of a professional NHL hockey player growing up, Nylander just seems so down to earth.

Public persona obviously.

And as a winger they had forsling on him all the time

Not sure. I would be more confident knowing Knies is there. How about you? If yes I think Willy would too
It’s hard to say. At this point, Knies isn’t Tom Wilson and probably will never be but he will likely be a better player and will be able to look after himself. I do think last year Matthews was more comfortable with physicality having Domi and Bertuzzi on his wings. I don’t like the fact that Berube was unwilling to change up the lines when things were obviously not going well. I would have liked to have seen McMann on the second line with Tavares and Nylander and maybe even give Domi some shifts there when Tavares was clearly having trouble keeping up.
