By the time of the draft Nonis was hanging by the string, I dont think he was allowed to make any decisions affecting the organization's future.

At least if I was in Shanny's shoes I wouldnt let a guy who i am going to let go make such an important decision.

I think Shanahan would have been all over that Nylander pick. Cause he knows the family and played with Michael Nylander.

And to think that we have Dave Nonis to thank for Willie!

pretty sure there was a report that shanahan pushed for nylander and had a long meeting before the draft with the family, because nonis had someone else in mind. I could be wrong but im 99% sure that was the report from tsn.

Shanny stated that he talked to a lot of friends in Europe and he was his selection.

not like he has much competition.

He since Kadri suspension is our best forward...

Our best player is Rielly and it really is not at all close at this time.

Love his game and if he continues to develop he may be considered our best player but that may not happen as we have Marner and potentially this year's draft pick who may surpass him..

As a group it was going to be between Ehlers & Nylander, we know the final decision. Nonis was a positive member of the group at that time.

I am curious to see how Nylander stacks up against Ehlers or Larkin next season. It does seem like he had a potential to have a 50-point season if he played this entire season.

Then again, his absence did help with our tank. If Babcock was a lot more involved in line matching, forward pairings, we'd probably win a lot more games and that's not what we want.

best player, you mean.

By next year I could certainly see it happening with a full training camp + off season under him, especially because being as young as he is, he probably hasn't filled out.

He's stylistically different than Larkin but truthfully speaking, I think Larkin's game translates to the NHL better in terms of immediate impact because of his 200-foot game. He doesn't have nearly the offensive upside of Nylander however.

why do people think Larkin is good defensively?

I mean...he's a better prospect than Pulju/Dubois/Chychrun etc.

Matthews and Laine have him beat.

how does Laine have him beat?

Willy has been a record setting producer in all his leagues.

Laine this year is far behind 17yr old Liiga record scoring by the likes of Barkov and Granlund, and closer in production to the likes of Lehkonen and Armia.

Players outside the organization don't count.

Currently the best players would rank as,

Rielly
Kadri
(JVR)
Nylander
Gardiner

It won't be long before Marner tops that list.

Because he is, always have been.

"I think there's certainly areas where he can learn and get better defensively," Blashill said. "At times, he wants to go to the puck a lot, which a lot of the great players do. He's just got to make sure when he goes to the puck, he gets the puck."
