Rangers, Flyers, and Penguins all have vacancies. Either the highest profile coaching gig in the league or returning to one of his legacy teams.

Considering that the Canucks aren’t even willing to pony up $200k for their top prospect (who likely would not reach those bonuses) I have a hard time believing they will ante up to pay Tocchet.

I equally doubt they will then go and spend that money on Mike Sullivan. The most likely option is that they promote Malholtra.
Sullivan will probably be cheaper than Tocchet. Tocchet was coach of the year and has sentimental interest with Philly and NY

I've been saying for many months that while I like Toch, I am not a fan of his system and I don't think it's a good fit for this team. The Hughes comments (and Petey) are absolutely important, but let's not forget that everyone loved Boudreau as well and that in retrospect, that was the right move.

It's wild to think we are sitting here potentially saying goodbye to last year's Jack Adam's winner, but I also think there are good options. Whether it is Sully or even Malholtra, I think as long as Hughes is onboard a change is not a "sky falling" situation. In fact, I think it could be a big opportunity. Defense is no longer the problem it was, mainly due to our personnel. I say let the offensive "peacocks fly."😁

I'd have been more concerned about him leaving if he'd led EP, Miller and Hughes. Solving that mess was something I'd expect out of team leadership...not just the players but the entire leadership. I'm still pissed. And I'd be fine with Manny taking over if Toc leaves.

I'm good with him gone to be honest. Losing and being boring is brutal the team just doesn't show anything offensively with him. The shot totals we're sickening to see every game. We need a coach that cares about scoring as well and not someone who's just trying not to get scored on.

It was nice to have a team that didn't give up a million breakaways and actually got in lanes and all last season. Didn't really carry into this year until it was too late. We have a defensive corps that will outperform what we had under previous coaches even if Tocchet is gone.

I personally am super ambivalent about this. Wouldn't bug me one bit if he was gone, but also wouldn't be mad if he was back either. Our biggest problem was injury, if we had a healthy Demko putting up 2023-24 numbers we are still playing right now. Obviously a lot of bad luck in other areas too, so it's not all on him, but part of his job was to not let a locker room issue get that bad and certainly to not make it a public issue. He's one of the first guys that confirmed it to the media and he didn't have to do that. Team also plays a pretty boring low event style unless Hughes has the puck (since he's allowed to play).

If Hughes wants us to keep Tocchet we should though. I don't buy that Quinn is already out the door even if the fanbase is eager to push that for some reason. Self fulfilling prophecy there if anything.

If they don't want to pay Tocchet what he's asking... in what world would they pay what it would take to get Sullivan?
I do think there is some truth to this. I do think it's more complicated than that though, it's not stretch to think that this management group values Sullivan a lot more than Tocchet. I wonder if this management group wants to make Tocchet one of the top paid coaches in the NHL? Anything over $4 million is an overpayment for Tocchet. It would probably be much easier to get Francesco to open the pocket up for Sullivan a two-time Stanley Cup Winner than Tocchet.

Ok but Rutherford said they made a massive offer. Biggest in Vancouver coaching history or something to that effect. Seems like it's not going any higher.

How much do you think Vancouver paid for coaches recently?

Cap was much smaller AVs day.

Tortorela: lower cap. $2m per year

Willie D: ahl coach & bargain bin

Travis Green: AHL coach and bargain bin

Tocchet: unemployed, baggage, crappy record. $2.75m/year. He the highest paid in canucks histrionics i believe.

Anything over $2.75m would be the biggest in canucks history. That leaves a lot of room between that and $5m (reported ask). They could offer tocchet a $1 raise and that still be telling the truth.

EP vs RT?
Who wins?

RT already stated he couldn't get through to EP. There was something negative with JTM.

Media is starting to hint all the time that there was something between RT and some players, not positive.

Tocchet talk is all smoke and mirrors, a distraction from Allvin's mistakes. Setting up a bad year to blame on Tocchet's departure and a Hughes trade at next year's draft. They have had their media attach Hughes to Tocchet so if he goes then Hughes is next and none of it Allvin's fault, right?

If Tocchet WANTED to stay he would have signed already but even though official talks can't happen between him and other teams think on it, who is the coach for the worlds, at the 4 nations and who is/was the manager(s)?

There are many other teams that are in better shape and circumstances, Anaheim is close to breaking out, Seattle is a no tax state, Pittsburgh and Philly are close to home and he has an existing reputation as a player, Boston goes for winners but don't suffer bad coaches so he might not fit there, Rangers could decide for him instead of Sullivan, no doubt there will be another one or two coming up as well.

But to think none of these have met for a beer or two and chatted "what ifs" or "how close my team is" is being totally naive. Does he have an agent? Agents talk all the time, they can be the go between for talks and there is no crossing the line. The BIG news was Tocchet was in town, yep, players stay and work out but Tocchet jets off somewhere else ASAP.

Whatever, he has provided the owned media/marketers with weeks or months of material and Allvin avoids any responsibility for the status of the team.

When is his contract officially up?
I don't know the latest but I understand he hasn't been given permission to talk to other teams. Could he be waiting until he's released, can look at other offers, then decide?
I guess, if it goes that far, he probably wouldn't be back.

I highly doubt its a management holding up the contract... I don't think they care if they pay the coach 1 mil or 30 mil. Aqua would be the one having the issue. He may force management to do his negotiation, but I really don't think the management care too much.

Ah, that sucks. The team had its flaws under Tocchet but they cleaned up a lot of bad habits that were unprofessional for an NHL team. I think they could have built off that foundation he created.

I'm starting to be very concerned about our willingness to spend money here.........this is not good........not good indeed
They aren't willing.

It's very clear.

Ownership jacked up prices next year just to try and get remotely even with the exchange difference between the USD and CDN dollar.

This team goes backwards next year.

This is a nightmare off season. I reserve my judgement until I see who is replacing him.

Pro-
- Quinn likes him. Which is very important.
- Team was in most games while severely undermanned.
- Good respected tandem with Gonchar and Foote.

Con-
- Coaching style really stifled offensive creativity, which hampers the stars that like the rush game.
- New coaching staff will need a work with this roster of players that fit tocchets system.
- Missed the playoffs.
- Mismanaged the EP and Miller relationship.
