Do i think either is guaranteed a cup? No, Tampa-Florida offers the same scenario. Now I'd take the winner of those two series over the field to win the cup.

Hopefully Dallas passes Winnipeg to save us from this 1st rd matchup, and from WPG/MIN

Hell if I know. That’s why the teams play. However, I hope officiating doesn’t affect the outcome of the games. We have seen a few stinkers of late.

Avs-Stars should be a WCF matchup which just shows you how bad the current seeding structure is.
Yup, this format is terrible, it prevents two best teams from conference to making it to Conference Finals. It doesn't reward winning in regular season and locks boring matchups every year (Kings-Oilers). It should have been changed long time ago, but somehow this atrocity is still going.

Didn't last year, far too early to make that jump this year too.

Western conference just too stacked.

Also, the fact that these teams meet in the first round continues to just defy all logic when looking at those point totals....2 and 4 seed playing eachother? What a backwards system the NHL uses.

I couldn't agree more. Regular season is too long as it is. Boring as hell and almost no point to it other than cash in on the fans. 82 games is too much.

Dallas picking up 1 out of a possible 4pts on the weekend vs. two very beatable teams, probably sank any realistic shot of that happening.

That said, 3pts back with 5 games left, including a head to head matchup, I suppose there's still an outside chance.

Ya like others have said, chances are no.

There’s a lot of great teams this year so i’d be betting the farm.

Neither Colorado or Dallas stand out to me as clear cut favourites anyways right now.

Who do you think is a fav now? I have a hunch that TBL s/b considered a dark horse.

Real chance Colorado loses in round 2 like they usually do anyways

Not sure I have a favourite to be honest. I just think there’s a group of strong contenders who all have an equal shot at the cup this year. TB is definitely apart of the group imo.

I think having a team that has won the SC makes a difference. They know what it takes to get there and win it. Maybe that’s why the TBL concern me. Ah well, it could be any of the PO teams. Hell if I know.

Can't see the series winner, if it happens, winning. You've got to get through this series, then the Jets, before Vegas or the Blues. just a whole lot of tough series to get through

Absolutely. The removal of the 1-8 seed is part of the reason my interest in playoff hockey's plummeted so much since the early 2010's. They desperately need to bring it back.

The whole reason for this PO format was they wanted to build rivalries, but have done everything in their power to make sure no real rivalries develop.
I still hate Colorado because of the 90s/early 00s. The last 15-20yrs meh who cares about them.
Playing them every year doesn't make a rivalry

Way to jump the gun here, there's a very real chance Dallas pass Winnipeg.
I think that Dallas and Colorado are the top 2 teams in the western bracket, although Vegas can get hot and probably the Oilers as well.

idk, was listening to NHL network yesterday and they were talking about how stacked down the middle the avs are with nelson and coyle additions and i dont see it. sure they are good players but after the trade deadline whoopla fades, its really not that exciting. imo they will go as far as mack and makar can carry them. their goalie has zero playoff games

Nelson and coyle are a big addition and far greater than what they had down the middle last year plus they add a lot of experience, with them and hopefully Nichuskin healthy and playing and maybe the addition of Landeskog and some solid goaltending the Avs are way deeper and better than the Avs that went to ot game 6 last year.

Yeah I mean there’s some hate from Avs fans for the Kivi OT elimination a few years back. However the bigger rivalry aspect between the two teams is stuff that is purely incidental. Duchene, Rantanen, and Nichushkin playing for opposing teams has nothing to do with how often Colorado plays Dallas.

Sadly a rivalry USUALLY comes from moreso from having dirty or questionable players. In the timeframe you’re talking about it was stuff like would the Avs stars be able to get past Hatcher. Colorado has a rivalry with St. Louis because of everything with Kadri.

Could a rivalry develop this time around? Maybe. I’m just excited in general for this matchup. It’s a shame if Heiskanen won’t be ready, but Harley has been a force since being given that top pairing role.
