Will some fans still value the World Championships over Olympic Gold?

For arguments sake let's say that Russia wins this years World Hockey Championships. It will have been there 4th championship since 2008 and during that time they also lost in Finals back in 2010. However in between those wins they are also coming off back to back Quater Final losses at the 2010 and 2014 Olympics. So if Russia wins the World Hockey Championships in 2014 are some fans in Europe and I say them because I believe they take that tournament more seriously compared to those in North America, think Russia is still better compared to Canada after having back to back Olympic Gold in Mens Ice Hockey.

Nobody really values the World Championships as a higher level of achievement than winning the Olympics.

I agree I think the reason why the WHC is so admired to Europeans is because it's a tournament they know they actually have a chance to win. The last 2 Olympics Europe hasn't had a sniff of gold. Canada-USA in 2010, and 2014 Canada killed Sweden. It wasn't even close, puck possession, relentless forechecking..of course they're going to look at the WHC with more gust than the Olympics. The only way Canada was going to lose was if Lundqvist had the best game of his life.

Amateur hour tournament

The IIHF World Championships are a joke, I mean it really says it all when they are holding a "World Championship" only 2 months after the Olympics just determined who the real world champion is, to have this tournament in May literally a blink of an eye from February is just laughable. The European nations love it though, me personally I don't even watch it, I may catch highlights on TSN later in the night but I have zero tolerance for such an amateur hour tournament.

As you couldn't even win this one at home on small ice I totally understand your point. Amateurs....

For casual hockey fans(national team fans) the WHC is alot bigger mainly because they think because football wc= best equals hockey wc= best.

And it doesn't help that the olympic football tournament is a joke.

I think in Finland even most casual fans realize that Olympic games are way more precious, even while they really appreciate WHC and possible succes in it.

Many times it have been stated in public that Torino 2006 and 2004 silver were better performance result than 1995 gold. If some one says WHC is higher tournament, every one will think he's dumb, so it's pretty clear here actually.

In Sweden, has been said that Football World Championships and Football olympics confuse them to think that WHC is highest in Hockey too. Finns don't care that much about football. There are football fans here too, but when it comes to casuals, Finnish baseball is probably equal sport and at least has pretty much equal ticket sale ratings with Football.

Umm what are you talking about? last time I checked Canada has won more hockey golds than any other country in history, I don't think i'm insecure about anything and I'm not disliking the tournament for any reason other than what I pointed out, and are you STILL using the size of the ice as an argument against Canada when we just won olympic gold on large ice not once but twice now (2002,2014)

Its a silly tournament, bottom line you have the olympics in Feb that already determined who the world champs are and then 2 months later in May a World Championship, it just cheapens everything and its 100% unnecessary, its pointless. Canada win or lose, its a dumb tournament and its why it has terrible tv ratings in Canada.

Sure hockey is is the most watched sport though.

Well, every town has many full teams playing beer-sort of hockey and they aren't counted as registered players, even though they probably have played for their lifes. Includes EX pro's and division players, ect.

No one is going to think that a World Championship is at an equal or higher level than an Olympic gold, but multiple World Championship titles is definitely a better indication of a country's over-all power/ranking than a single Olympic win.

That means nothing. Football has a much higher participation rate than hockey in Canada too. That's simply because it's affordable and accessible to children. That rate drops dramatically once children pass the age of 12 and start choosing their own hobbies, at least here. I know of 1 adult friend who still plays football (soccer), while dozens still play hockey regularly.

Analogy fail/10

Remind me... do they usually send an AHL team to see if the NHL team qualifies for the playoffs?

And? Who are you compering to AHL teams? Its not like your so beloved Olympics had Austria and Slovenia, teams who don't even play in WC A division.

And yeah, if not AHL, KHL surely have some teams who are better then NHL bottom teams. So not the best of the best tournament.

Some of those teams don't play in WC A Division because they're handcuffed.

Kind of like this..

Hey Chicago? You want to play in the playoffs this year?

Let's see if you can make it without Kane, Toews, Keith, and Seabrook.

See you in April. If not there's a KHL team who clearly deserves it more.

And seriously lol the KHL having teams better than the NHL bottom teams. :handclap:

Bring Cheecho, Dawes, and Marcel Hossa back over then if they're the NHL killers.

Ohh, you are from that kind of group. "I didn't even seen any hockey outside of NA, but I guess they can't play, only Canada can".

Otherwise you would not state so ignorant stalemates.

Its like names plays hockey, and team effort, coaches and other stuff is irrelevant. :D

How did Finland with fringe NHL'ers, KHL scrubs, and they even had SM-Liga amateurs, defeated Russia, and roasted USA with their rosters full of NHL stars, USA even had full NHL roster, omg, were they good...

Please don't bother to post that "they didn't care" nonsense.

Strong abuse of language. Finland doesn't just have fringe NHL players. No one thinks Selanne, Raask, Maata, Granlund, Jokinen are fighting to stay in the big leagues.

Secondly, no one said there isn't any good players outside of the NHL, they're are just no NHL quality teams outside of the NHL. Do you understand the difference?

You said the KHL, and possibly the AHL, have better teams than the worst NHL teams. I think that is absurd statement. If they were better the owner would gladly swap rosters and enjoy the savings in salary. 99% of players in the outside leagues are there because they couldn't cut in the NHL. Some of them are skilled but the overwhelming majority of them are there because they couldn't cut it.

If any single outside team could beat an NHL team in a best of 7 series I'd gladly retract my statement...

Ohh, I guess used the word wrong. Sorry English is far from my first language. :)

I just wanted to say their are very few NHL stars. Ok, I guess all goalies are elite, can argue about that. Maata is looking really good this season. Others? Great players, but not stars.

I didn't quite understand that salary swap thing. I didn't say that some team may have their farm team, better then the real one. I just said, that possibly best AHL team, is better than worst team in NHL.

And yeah, if they want to swap salary`s with best KHL teams, good luck with that. Dont think they would be economy in any ways. :)

I have no doubt that best KHL teams would beat NHL bottom teams, no brainer for me.

I guess we should wait for the clash then. :D Didn't think we will see it anytime soon, bo7 for sure.

Got my 667 post, didn't want to stay at 666. :)

Vaananen, Karalahti, Aaltonen are far from amateurs, play and salary wise. They get ten times the money AHL pays off..
