Will Montreal tank at this point?

I'd do a modified Leaf-inspired tank. Sell off the veterans for future picks and prospects and drop as low as possible in the standings.

Not sure what team you are thinking of but that isn't the Leafs. Leafs put their vets on LTIR to tank. Next season they still had them all

The month leading into the break was tough. Especially after a really good run of 20 games prior to it. I think they'll tread water for the most part for the rest of the season. Last night was their best effort in a month, but it's likely up and down the rest of the way as they try to get rid of some UFAs and back fill with youth.

Who knows what happens honestly. The league had and whoever was not at the 4 nations got some rest so maybe the Habs will go on another winning streak since they got some rest. It really is up in the air.

Kessel, Panik, Reimer, Phaneuf, et al.

All traded prior to drafting Matthews and all traded for future picks and prospects.

He certainly fits in well with their culture.

Mailloux had to walk the walk and went into programs and stuff

What he did when he was younger was disgusting for sure, but he did what he had to do

Everything related to the Habs is front page news in the Province of Québec, and so if he had done nothing, everyone would know

I think the Habs are entering the point of the rebuild where they aren't necessarily looking to stock up on draft capital, because they have alot of it.

It's like when you open up a jigsaw puzzle and put all the scrambled peices out on the floor. There are alot of peices and now it's time to start unscrambling them and finding glue peices.

What this means is that if a veteran player with no future on the club is drawing interest, sure they can add jigsaw peices. But in years past, I think this category may have been more broad. This year, a guy like Jake Evans perhaps is someone they would try to keep.

It would be a semi sell year (if that makes sense).

That's just called a rebuild. They didn't sell the vets on the team like JVR, Bozak, Komarov, Gardiner, etc at the time. They traded away their old core.

JVR was out at the TDL with a broken foot. Bozak wasn't playing due to a concussion.
No trades available there.

Komarov was just getting off a league suspension and wasn't exactly prime bait for a trade.

Gardiner was the only real trade bait available out of that bunch...and at 26 the Leafs probably felt he was more valuable to the post-tank re-emergence than his market value at the TDL.

So.. they put them on LTIR like my original comment said. Komarov could have easily returned a 1st that year. He was really good in Toronto

Nobody "tanks" purposefully.

But, imo, the management should definitely be selling at the trade deadline. It's time to get rid of some players to make space for whoever we'll be going after this summer. We need an experienced 2C and probably another Top 4D before next year.
