Will Matthews score more than Ovechkin by the end of his career?

Comparing how many goals they have scored in same amount of games is stupid imo. One guy is routinely hurt every year and the other guy never gets hurt. It’s going to be extremely difficult for anyone to break Ovechkins record just due to his combination of goal scoring and durability.

It’s not impossible but the durability and continued success at an older age are insane outliers for Ovechkin which will be difficult to replicate.

I see it as highly unlikely.

Similar to people wondering who can break Tom Brady’s career records. Possible but highly unlikely given the longevity and level of excellence required.

anything over 100 goals away is not close
Interesting. That puts 3rd place (802) as not close and that's what I think Matthews can actually challenge if things go right.

900+ goals is gonna be tough but I think I can agree that ~90% is close, ~80% is a great attempt but not quite close enough.

Edit: that being said if i was 80% of the way through an ultra-marathon and didnt complete it, I'd likely tell people I was pretty f***in close....

Perspective I guess.

Matthews has played 625 out of a possible 692 career games (90.3%) up to his Y-28 season.
Ovi played 601 out of a possible 622 (96.6%)

I say no, mainly because I don't like Matthews. But also I think Ovechkins aging is abnormal.

All depends how much higher OV pushes it. Drai and Matthews are the only ones with any hope currently in the league. But I highly doubt either of them will. If Matthews ends up challenging maybe Howe at 801 or being just behind him would be cool, 700+ should be attainable. One Ovechkin record I can see Matthews breaking would be consecutive 30g seasons. Ovechkin has 15, Matthews is 9/9 in his career so far.

There have been like 60 NHL players to go into their 40s. Ovechkin hasn't done it, but is about to, coming off a goalscoring pace of ~56 goals / season. That's basically unheard of..... Matthews doesn't have a prayer.

I don't think Drai has a shot. He turns 30 next season and needs 496 goals to currently catch Ovechkin.

11 seasons from now takes him to age 40 and he would have to average 45 goals a year. He's only had 4 seasons of 45 goals or more in his first 10 seasons.

Expecting him to now average that out over 11 seasons from age 30 and on is insane.

Matthews with 3 years of 45+, I agree , I don’t think either gets there.

A shooter with a history of shoulder and wrist issues that seem to pop up every season probably isn't going to age as well as a guy that never had any real health issues aside from a broken leg at 39.

I think Matthews has the talent to get close. Based on his wrist injuries I doubt he gets there. His scoring drop from this season makes me wonder if the pressure as Leafs captain might also make that harder.
