Let’s say he is fairly likely to reach 700 goals, there are only 2 players in history that have 700 goals but less then 700 assists. Mike Gartner and Brett Hull.

He has 281 assists so far. He needs 417 assists to reach 700 career. Seems unlikely to me. Unless he plays into his age 39 and 40 seasons. So in 10 years from now, he will join Gartner and Hull IMO. He may only wanna play till he is 37 or 38, we don't know.

Doesn’t seem likely based on a typical career arc unless he changes his game a bit as he ages. He’s at exactly half an assist per game so far in his career. Continuing at that rate would need him to play 1400 games, which isn’t outrageous given his early start but is still a lot. That’s just over 10 more years of 82 game seasons, and would mean he’s have to stay fairly healthy and produces at the same rate even if he plays until 37/38. There’s a lot of good players who fell short of 700. I imagine he’ll probably be in the 600s though.

Probably not. Hes been a roughly 0.45 A/G player his whole career. Assuming a normal aging curve he will need to play about 1600ish games to reach 700 assists.

When I first read this thread I didnt think he was going to play that late in his career and he seems to love money much more than hockey maximizing his pocket at every opportunity as it is his right to do so. Having looked into it more it seems kind of likely that the leafs will sign him for another high aav contract but this time with 8 years of term. 38 he could potentially play to in that case.

I doubt he plays a year after that unless he is somehow still a force. So I don’t think he will. 600s

Doubtful. He’s 9 seasons in and he’s topped 40 assists only twice. Maybe he can do it again this year? For now, those two seasons are the anomalies, considering he’s generally below his .500 career average (he’s been below it five times).

A significant portion of Ovechkin’s assists came during his first six seasons. He had 46+ in all six and topped 50 during four of them. He had 313 assists in the 475 games he played, a 0.659 APG clip, significantly higher than Matthews’ current 0.500 APG.

If Ovechkin wasn’t the all-around monster that he was during the first quarter of his career, he probably wouldn’t clear 600 assists until the end of this season, rather than clearing 700 in reality at the beginning of this season.

With 30 more this season, admittedly lowballing him by 10 or so, Matthews could have 313 at the end. It will have taken him 170 games and 3 seasons longer to reach that figure than Ovechkin did.

The safe bet is no. 600 will be a challenge.
