It is weird that he hasn't had four goals in a game since his debut game. The guy has had numerous hattricks and has had 60 and 69 goal seasons.

But I say he'll match or surpass that game eventually.

I'd say he had many games that were better than that one. Just because he scored 4 goals in that one game means that it was his best. Far from it, in fact. I remember a few games just last season where he had hat tricks and lead his team to wins.

In what way? He’s had two 5 point games as well, and there’s probably games he was better where the production wasn’t as good, considering he’s become a better overall player. If you’re asking if he’ll ever score 5, then probably not as there’s only been 6 5-goal games since 96-97 and even Ovechkin doesn’t have one.

Contextually speaking it has to be his best game, for a game to overtake it he either has to top the total or at least come close to it in an incredibly clutch effort.

Him doing what he did at 18 in his first game is insane, him getting hat tricks in his prime or a hat trick and a great all around game in his prime isn't as crazy unless again it comes at an incredibly clutch time or he has a truly massive game

He was 19 not 18, and he lost the game
and was the cause of the winning goal.
So no, his first game will not be his best.
 
Best game in what aspect? Highest goal scoring game? He's already had games with more points than that.

It might be the most goals he ever scores in a single game but he likely matches that again at some point in his career. Even Ovechkin never hit 5 goals in a game, it's tough.

It’s not the four goals but it’s the one goal with one of the most creative pocket picks on Karlsson at his absolute peak, attempting that in your first game is crazy.
 
I only say yes because I'm not a Leafs fan and I don't believe that they're going to win a cup.

There aren't many curses I believe in in sports, but the team who's gone the longest without winning the cop. I've always assumed they're not going to win it.

I used to think the same of the Rangers I guess, and I don't expect Matthews to leave Toronto anytime soon.

Maybe I'm wrong. Maybe one day. Matthews is in the Stanley Cup finals and he puts up a hat trick in game 6 and then we can say that's the best game of his career. We'll see.

This doesn't even make sense. Did Matthews win the Cup in his first game? Why does the game with more goals than his first NHL game have to involve winning the Cup?

He scored 2 goals in 3 minutes against the 3x defending Easten Conference champs in Tampa in the third period of a playoff game they were down 4-1 with 10 mins to go to win the game and basically the series. Series went from being 2-2 to 3-1 - surely that's a bigger game than a 4 goal game in October that you lost.

That's why the poll makes no sense it's so ambiguous that people are making up their own definitions and answering. So everyone has a different question that they're effectively answering.

For you, the question is will Auston Matthews win a Stanley Cup. For another poster, the question is will Auston Matthews score 4 goals in a game again? For another, it's will Auston Matthews score 5 goals? For another, it's will Matthews ever reach his 328 goal pace he set in his first NHL game again? For others, it's was 4 goals his best game to date?
