To be fair, chronic injuries have played a part in limiting his long-term ceiling.
Even with all of the games that he missed, he played more than a few hurt and was never one of those guys who was able to produce when not at 100%.
I'd say that he'll go down as a Pierre Turgeon kind of guy.
That is something I can agree with.
What else does he need to do? Win a cup?
Lets look at his cabinet:
Spengler Cup 2012 (lock-out)
2 All Star appearances
A bunch of individual awards from Junior/AHL
Two silvers at the WHC, two bronze and 1 silver for the WJHC
That cabinet is a bit lacking... it's not entirely his fault but... a cup would really, really, really help him.
So Mike Richards as a 29 year old in the AHL isn't underachieving because he has a cup, gold medal, world junior gold, etc. etc. etc.
I still like him and would take him on my team. I think he'll go down as a borderline elite player who hasn't won anything, not unlike many stars in the 80s, 90s, 00s, etc...
He won't stand out as anything special unless he wins something and/or leads his team in doing so.
