Think Cam Johnson. Cam’s bounced around since North Dakota days. Lots of ECHL years for McKay are coming too. Might end up being an NHL goalie, as Cam still may. Just not a ton of spots and those with the physical tools and size are going to get the first shots at it.

AVs needs G depth. Kuemper (UFA) Franc (2 years). They only have Annunen (mixed results) and even less with Miner. Already some success with smaller Goalies with Franc (signed 2 years) and having strong DMen could help limit high danger shots.

Outside of Shesterkin, there isn’t a single goalie I prefer in the Rangers organization over McKay.

He’ll get signed.

Can someone shed some light on how McKay was able to split the vote with Devon Levi and still win the Hobey Baker this year? Esp when Levi won the Richter?
Not a Buffalo fan just curious because I didn't track McKay and Levi's >.950 SV% really popped for me.

Not 100% positive on this but I believe it to be 2 different groups of people voting on the awards

Since he’s 24, McKay would have to sign a 1 year ELC.

Probably some errors but here’s a ballpark approximation of expected AHL goalies next season. Mix in the various UFA guys as well:

Anaheim: Dostal/Eriksson-Ek/Clang?
Calgary: Wolf/Parsons?
Edmonton: Skinner/Konovalov/Fanti
Los Angeles: Villalta/Ingham/Hrenak
San Jose: ? /Sawchenko /Emond
Seattle: Daccord / ?
Vancouver: DiPietro/Silovs
Vegas: Thompson/Patera/Saville

Arizona: Prosvetov/Korenar?/Tendeck
Chicago: Soderblom?/Morris/Stauber
Colorado: Annunen/Miner
Dallas: Scheel/Poirier
Minnesota: Jones/Baribeau
Nashville: Ingram/Vomacka
St. Louis: Hofer/Ellis/Cranley
Winnipeg: Berdin/Holm

Boston: Keyser/Bussi
Buffalo: Luukkonen/ ? (maybe Levi or Portillo turn pro)
Detroit: Cossa/ ? (Bednar/Eliasson unsigned)
Florida: Fitzpatrick? / Guzda
Montreal: Montembeault? / Primeau
Ottawa: Gustavsson/Sogaard/Mandolese
Tampa Bay: Melnichuk/Miftakhov/Alnefelt
Toronto: Kallgren? / Woll / Scott?

Carolina: Kochetkov/Makiniemi/Warm
Columbus: Tarasov? / Greaves
New Jersey: Daws/Schmid
NY Rangers: Wall/Garand
NY Islanders: Skarek/?
Philadelphia: Ersson/Ustimenko
Pittsburgh: Lindberg/Gauthier
Washington: Fucale/Stevenson/Shepard
Sure makes it seem like he should sign in Seattle.

From the Richter Award page: About / | Mikerichteraward

Candidates for the Mike Richter Award are determined by nominations from all 60 NCAA Division I men’s hockey head coaches. The 10 semifinalists, five finalists and winner are then be selected by a committee of coaches, scouts and members of the media.

Criteria for the Mike Richter Award:

  • Candidates must display outstanding skills on the ice
  • Candidates should be in good academic standing at an NCAA college or university
  • Consideration should be given to academic achievement and sportsmanship
  • Candidates must comply with all NCAA rules; be full-time students at an NCAA college or university; and complete 50 percent or more of the season
  • Consideration should be given to the candidate’s activities in the community

For the Hobey Baker Award: Hobey Baker Award: History, winners, selection process

There are four criteria against which nominees for the Hobey Baker Memorial Award are considered:

- Strength of character, on and off the ice

- Contribution to the integrity of the team and outstanding skills in all phases of the game

- Scholastic achievement and sportsmanship

- Compliance with all NCAA rules, including being a full-time student in an accredited college or university and completing 50 percent or more of the season

-----------

There are three steps involved in the award’s selection process. First, the head coaches of NCAA DI ice hockey schools nominate the top three players in their respective leagues and the top three players in the nation. College hockey fans can also participate by voting online during this step. Price Waterhouse Coopers accounting firm counts these votes and the top 10 finalists are announced.

Next, voting begins for the “Hobey Hat Trick,” which narrows the award field from ten finalists to three. The winner is then selected from this trio of players. The voting in this step of the process is by the Hobey Baker Memorial Award Selection Committee. The committee is “a geographically balanced group of 29 individuals representing print and electronic sports media, college hockey coaches and officials, and NHL scouts.” There is also a round of fan voting in this step of the process.

Similar criteria for both, but some of the attributes are certainly subjective.

Seattle shared an AHL team this year so they just didn't need to have that many goalies under contract yet. Their AHL club will start play in Palm Springs next season, so they'll be adding a fourth goalie at some point.

Decent amount of retread AHL veterans who are UFA this offseason as well: Phoenix Copley, Collin Delia, Malcolm Subban, Keith Kinkaid, Calvin Pickard, Alex Stalock, Maxime Lagace, Alex Lyon, Luis Domingue, Troy Grosenick, Jon Gillies, Zane McIntyre, Charlie Lindgren, Adam Huska, J.F. Berube, Aaron Dell, Callum Booth, Garret Sparks, Michael Hutchinson. Plus some possible guys returning from Europe like Oscar Dansk.

Not much downside in giving McKay a 1 year ELC and seeing if he fits. I'd just have tempered expectations.

Is it safe to say that since he hasn't signed yet that no one wants to offer him a deal for this season and his agent is holding out for a contract that burns this year? Kind of surprised a number of teams haven't taken a shot with him instead of rolling with retread depth like that, but I could see that no one wants to burn a year or offer a bigger than necessary deal.

Maybe somebody with more CBA knowledge can correct me, but in another thread it was mentioned that it was past the deadline to sign somebody (who wasn't already on your reserve list) and have them play in the AHL this season. Unlike Meyers, I don't think McKay has the leverage to sign his ELC and burn a year immediately. So McKay might not necessarily feel a rush to have to sign yet. From the sounds of it, there seemed to be some level of interest.

Realistically, most teams probably already have a guy (or two) younger with higher upside than McKay. Other teams might rather have a #3 with some NHL experience in case of injury.

Mix in somebody like Strauss Mann who's still looking for an ELC. Between the two, I'd take Mann. I forget, but do the guys in Europe (not including the KHL guys who were released early) have to wait until mid-May to sign? Unlike other positions, teams will have a finite amount of spots they can allocate for goaltenders.

I'll let others explain the CBA stuff. Yeah I don't see anyone signing him for NHL duty this year so if he can't go to the AHL then most teams are going to just say we'll catch you next season. That is a tricky one since goalies are rarely good enough to make the jump to NHL immediately but some select skaters can do it. But I don't think you could say all teams have better options in their system that they could roll with instead, its just they don't want to spend the money to only take a brief look at him now.

Mike McKenna's thoughts on McKay:

The 2022 NCAA Hobey Baker Award Memorial Award winner is a goaltender named Dryden McKay – who might not even get a proper shot with an NHL organization.

The last time a goalie won the Hobey Baker Memorial Award was in 2001, when Ryan Miller – ever heard of him? – won it after his junior year at Michigan State University. It’s only the third time in NCAA history the award has gone to a netminder.

Yet the feeling I get is that McKay, who was named after Hall of Fame goaltender Ken Dryden, is probably going to be overlooked by NHL teams. He’s listed at 5-foot-11 and is 24 years old. Those are both big strikes against the Downers Grove, Ill., native if you’re looking through the eyes of NHL management.

Maybe a team gives him an NHL contract. All he’s done at Minnesota State is win. But he’s undersized and the clock is ticking. And he’s been insulated by the team in front of him.

I talked with a few people today that have a similar feeling: that McKay might have to go to Europe or accept an AHL contract to start his pro career. After an NCAA tenure featuring 113 wins and 34 shutouts, what else could McKay do to prove his worth? The sad reality is that there’s a six-foot-tall glass ceiling for NHL goaltending prospects.

He’ll get signed.

Dylan Garand? Made the Canadian WJC team two years in a row and was probably going to be their No. 1 this year. He’s also had a stellar year in the WHL. He should be the main guy in Hartford next year.

Signing with the Rangers might be kind of intimidating for a young goalie right now. If you make the Rangers you are going to be Sheshterkin‘s understudy and get the leftovers. I imagine it’s kind of the same deal in Tampa. Georgiev is still fairly young but he’s never going to be the No. 1 and never going to score a big contract which is probably the biggest reason he wants out. His game has been going downhill and it’s only with another team that he’s going to get a chance to resurrect that and maybe become a No.1.

McKay can't sign a NHL contract starting this 2021-22 season and also play in the AHL. After the trade deadline teams are very restricted in which players can be assigned to the AHL, and McKay wouldn't be one of them.

McKay could sign a NHL contract starting next 2022-23 season and then sign a ATO with the AHL team to play in the rest of the 2021-22 AHL season and playoffs. It's quite common for players to do this.

I'd say given his size and the strength of his team, he's not as sure a bet as you'd think. It will be interesting to see how he progresses.

Looks like he accidentally took a tainted substance and accepted a six month suspension, but this might explain why he hasn't signed yet:

He’s an unrestricted free agent and there was NHL interest. As we waited for news on his next stop, word started to seep out that something was up. Now we know what it is.

McKay can resume practising with a team on Aug. 25 and play games on Oct. 11. According to several sources, there will still be interest. He’ll have to start at the AHL level and work his way up, and there’s no shame in that.

Maybe his drug suspension has some teams wondering though it looks like it was accidental and it was changed from 2years to 6 months. A vitamin of all things had the prohibited substance and it was not on the label.

I thought one of the rumors was the Edmonton was talking to him and it was probably his first choice as it likely would allow him to make the jump to the NHL next season.

I'd be personally surprised if any team penciled in an NCAA goalie immediately for an NHL spot. Edmonton already has a crowded crease in the AHL with some combination of Stuart Skinner, Olivier Rodrigue, Ilya Konovalov, and newly signed Ryan Fanti.
