Player Discussion Will Cuylle

Does that mean his play has changed? i dont think so? He's also had 4 overturned goals on the seaon.
No, it just means he wasn't going to score the 30+ goals he was on-pace for playing third line minutes.

It has nothing to do with style. Nobody does what he was doing. It's like a guy shooting 80% from three the first few games of the season and going "welp, I guess this is normal now, the guy gets a bunch of open looks."

I think he's a good player but people were talking about him like the face of the franchise. You never make assessments of a player when they're scoring like Ovechkin. Unless it is Ovechkin.

over
and over
and over
and over
But it's such an *unprecedented* situation these rookies walk into with NYR. How could they ever figure out ways to incorporate younger players in with the vets? You can't just have friends NOT play together.

Someone's post mentioned this team having a feel of varsity and JV cliques and it feels like the coaches/FO buy into that. They don't get much of a chance to play with the vets or get generally more ice time because they're just *too young* and "Well we gotta get the vets going." Maybe..playing with some of these younger, hungrier players consistently might get the more downtrodden vets going again?

No, they have to play the twins together in their swan song season.

He does look a little like he's off a bit in terms of getting the puck as much or shooting etc
Ups and downs happen though

My post said that. I was complaining about it forever on Blueshirt Banter before they started asking for money.

It's ridiculous. the Zib/Kreider and Bread/Butter (troch)or I can't believe it's not Butter(strome). top 4 thing killed our teams development and Coaches absolutely had a hand in it

My gut says 1 year $$2.75 MM. Similar to when Lundqvist came off his entry level contract. Take one for the team this summer because the cap is tight and we will make it up to you on January 1.

Maybe a bit more than that but that definitely could happen.

What could put a spanner in the works is another team trying to steal him by offering him much larger $'s/term. I think at that point the Rangers will have to match or take compensation and if compensation is a next year's 1st or maybe that and a + of another draft pick they might want to look at that team's prospects to be a playoff team or not and make their decision from that. I would hate to lose Cuylle but if the compensation is a potential lottery pick in what a lot of people think is going to be a great draft then maybe you let him go.

He should still play more.

This team keeps every forward in the bottom six until year 3 or 4 and then wonders why the guy is a bottom sixer.
His game will change if he is out there 19-20
minutes a game. Not a bad thing, just something everyone should expect to see.

Although not throwing body every shift can also be a consequence of playing with better offensive guys who control the puck more effective

I'll add this....it seems a number of opponents fans think they can get Cuylle with an offer sheet where they only give up a 2nd rounder. I think they underestimate how much strategy has to go into a hostile move of stealing someone's player away. If they really really want Cuylle they will be looking at the Rangers capability of matching and it's pretty well known that the Rangers are interested in moving some hefty contracts----most probably Kreider and possibly Zibanejad, Panarin, Lafreniere. The Rangers capability of moving space will factor in to another team giving him an offer sheet.

I suspect the Rangers will move one of the above before free agency or right after the Stanley Cup is settled or at the draft or before July 1. And Kreider is the most likely. Drury will need to do that if he has any interest in scoring one of the bigger contracts on day 1 of free agency just so to still have some cap flexibility if someone were to get Cuylle or K'Andre to sign an offer sheet.

It is a hostile takeover kind of move that doesn't lead to a lot of friendly feelings between teams. There is another option as well. Let's say the Canadiens put a 7 year $6.5 mil offer sheet out to Cuylle and he signs. There's the Rangers option to match---there's the compensation from Montreal option but there's also a trade option.....say maybe to the Sabres (in Montreal's own division) for someone like a Byram or Peterka. There's been talk that the Sabres might move either of those players already out there. Buffalo then matches Cuylle and the Canadiens are then shit out of luck.

Two quick notes.

1) You cannot trade a player during the match period or for 1 year if you match an offer sheet. So if Cuyle accepts an offersheet from Montreal, it is either the Rangers to match (and hold him) or Montreal. The Rangers can't accept and then trade (they can trade other players other than Cuyle)
2) Other offersheet rules, the AAV for compensation purposes is divided by 5 years (or if the contract length is <5 years, the lower years). Just a wrinkle in the offersheet rules, so you'll typically only see 5 year or less contract offers

Your example: MTL 7yrs/6.5M. For the compensation chart, it would be 9.1M/year (45.5M contract / 5 year AAV)

Offersheet Compensation for 25-26

There is going to be more money for him in the long run taking a lower 1yr deal now and getting PAID next offseason. Taking a $6x5 deal now would be shortsighted if he's looking at a $7x8 deal in a year.

He's just going to get better IMO

He's a power forward. They really hit their stride mid-late 20's. From what I remember he's also a gym rat.

lock him up

Lock him up for 8 years now. 6.2M.

He will be worth it and in 5 years that will be peanuts to whatever the cap is.
I'm not very familiar with the contract rules. Do we need to lock him up to a big contract? Feels like Kakko is going in to his 7th year looking at another small contract as a restricted FA.

No we can give him whatever, but if he keeps trending in the direction he is going, a strong power forward, who will be top 10 in hits each season and can potentially score 30 goals-50 points, than he will be looking for much more than 6M in a year or two.

When is he a UFA? I'd ideally like to maximize his cheaper cap years.
