If Makar and Hughes, two of the great offensive D men can’t do it then I don’t think any of the current crop has a chance. Maybe at some point in the future but it’s hard to see.

He's 15 and currently has 16 points in 12 games with the Everett Silvertips; pacing 90 points over a full season.
For comparisons sake, McDavid as a 15 year old with the Erie Otters had 66 points in 63 games.

This is a good point.
The player that will do it will be known as a potential generational player at 15, will be a consensus #1 overall draft pick, and be a superstar year one. This pedigree with force his NHL coach to let him play a wide open style.
DuPont is the best example of this potential in the last 40 years. We will see if he turns out.

In a few years when all those young forwards come into their prime there could be a lot of assists to pick up to go along with his own offensive.

It would take an oddly specific series of events to happen, like the top 5 scoring forwards all missing time and the top scoring defenseman to play all 82, while also having a career year. Very unlikely.

This just amplifies how good Orr was. Even today with all the advantages players have no one is coming close to sniffing this record.

Can't find odds for any defenseman, but Makar is +1600 and Q Hughes is +4500.

Orr just like the rest of the big 4 was a once in a lifetime player whose dominance we'll probably never see again. I might take another 100 years for Orr's dominance to be reached by a defenseman again.

Orr was the greatest player ever. He not only was the best offensive player, he was also the defensive player too. The guy could do it all. Makar has great offensive instincts but lacks defensive awareness. He’s kind of half an Orr.

This myth needs to die. He plays the most PK minutes among the Avs dmen for a reason. Makar isn't Erik Karlsson.
I think Makar is capable of a 110ish point season, which could probably win the Art Ross these days in a weaker season. Like say Benn’s Art Ross but in today’s game. We already saw Karlsson only 4 points away from 2nd place in 2016. Kane won it by a big margin but if he was injured, it could have made things close. It’s one of those things though where the talent is so strong right now I think it’s unlikely we see a weak Art Ross.

Just because it's unlikely does not at all mean it's impossible. Offense from the blueline has been vital for a while now and there have been dmen close in recent years. Some very very talented defenseman in the league right now. Sounds crazy but I still believe Makar has another gear.
All it would take is a week to week injury to a cpl fwds or an especially hot on ice shooting month.
