AHL: Wilkes Barre Scranton Penguins 24 25 the Players Sully Hates

  • We sincerely apologize for the extended downtime. Our hosting provider, XenForo Cloud, encountered a major issue with their backup system, which unfortunately resulted in the loss of some critical data from the past year.

    What This Means for You:

    • If you created an account after March 2024, it no longer exists. You will need to sign up again to access the forum.
    • If you registered before March 2024 but changed your email, username, or password in the past year, those changes were lost. You’ll need to update your account details manually once you're logged in.
    • Threads and posts created within the last year have been restored.
    • Our 2025 light and dark themes were lost, so we are rebuilding them. Light theme is currently available, but work in progress

Our team is working with Xenforo Cloud to recover data using backups, sitemaps, and other available resources. We know this is frustrating, and we deeply regret the impact on our community. We are taking steps with Xenforo Cloud to ensure this never happens again. This is work in progress. Thank you for your patience and support as we work through this.

I'm not meaning this as "I told you so" on Murashov, but I think people need to pump the brakes a bit with him. I think he has immense upside due to his insane athleticism, but goalies are so voodoo that it's really tough for me to put him as a top prospect until he has a longer track record. Look at Blomqvist last year, he had a terrific rookie year in the AHL with a .921 save% but has generally had a bad season in both the AHL and NHL this year.

We don't have any top five heck not even any top 10 picks currently in the system. So placing Murashov high considering we don't have any cornerstone pieces isn't at all outta line. IMO he has the highest upside of anyone. And I don't expect him to be here for at least a year and a half. I think by '27 he'll among our current prospects have the biggest impact. McGroarty as well.

I think people don't realize that lots of goalies look great when there's no book on them, but with video, lots of goalies fall off QUICK.

Also, even goalies with great stat lines in the NHL will have stretches where their #s are kinda meh. So a short stretch of "eh" for Mush is worth about the same as a short stretch of good.

As always, we gotta evaluate process over results. How does he look, regardless of the #s? Just like a skater can have a 3 point night and be shit, or have 0 points and be great, the same can go for a goaltender from a #s perspective.

It feels like goalies, we're much more likely to put higher stock on single-game performances, or a short stretch of dominance/failure than we do skaters. I don't see why, it's big picture for both.

I like this undrafted kid Atley Calvert…decent set of hands…has all the skills for a bottom six player…I hope he’s someone like Avery Hayes who earns a NHL contract with us…what’s his deal? Is he too slow to be a NHL possibility?

Teammate of Yager's that they brought in before the Yager/McGroarty trade that has mostly spent time in Wheeling this year. Interesting guy to keep an eye on but it's too early to give him an ELC right now.

That said, I think it's possible that he goes through the same progression that Hayes went through. Good CHL overager, mild rookie season split between the AHL and ECHL and then made an impact in his sophomore year in the AHL that got him an ELC.

Murashov 10-0, 4-0 against Hershey.
Not trying to diminish his performance but he's definitely getting a little lucky in the goal support department. I don't know what the exact number is but I know he was in net for some of these offensive blowouts the past few weeks.

Koivunen had a nice shift in OT before the goal. Took a hard shot from above the circles that required a good save from the goalie. Then went and won a forecheck battle in the offensive zone, stealing the puck and passing it in one motion over to Puusty who sort of fumbled it.

I think Groats gets the secondary assist on the OT goal.

He beat the two time defending Calder cup champions four straight times. And yes he's gotten some help. They won a game 9-0, but Muirashov got a shut out. Tonight he gave up two in a 3-2 victory.

Don't get me wrong, he has a ways to go, but the kid is 20 years old, 1st season in NA, bouncing back and forth between the ECHL and AHL. That's a lot of change in his life. I think he's doing pretty well all things considered.

And a .923 to tonight.

Every game was a win tho. 10-0

He gives them a chance to win every game. That’s what’s most important. He’s still 20 and adjusting to the pros.
He played last night in a mop up role and allowed three on 15 shots. But I agree, good to see him have a strong showing tonight.

Baby Pens are averaging 4.9 GF in his 10 starts. They put up an 8 spot earlier this month too. WBS is a wagon offensively, this really wasn't intended to come off as a slight against him. I just think it's fair to acknowledge there's a bit of luck in his remarkable 10 game unbeaten streak to start his AHL career.

Their offensive game has dried up lately though. I get your point, but when you consider the totality of it all he's done a pretty solid job. And one of those games Wilkes scored nine goals. Take that one away and its a little over four. I'm looking more at his save percentage and goals against. Is he playing at a 10-0 level, no. 7-2-1? Absolutely.
