Seems likely tbh. The Pens don't have any elite talent in the system. The McGroartys and Brozses of the world aren't going to forestall the Pens from tanking in the next 2-3 years.
They were never supposed to, imo. Your McG, Broz, Pickering, Koivunen guys are supporting cast dudes. Ideally they're settled into NHL roles and ready to go shortly after the Pens start landing those top flight, franchise building block guys cuz you really wanna strike while those types are on their ELCs.

Yeah it really depends how lucky we get with the draft.

If we don't get lucky we'll just end up in a Detroit scenario where McGroarty is our Dylan Larkin equivalent and we don't have the elite talent to surround him

Oh, even as a an unabashed McG guy, that's being real generous to McG.

But yeah. Scouting and development need to be absolutely on point, and the primary focus the next long while. Team's probably not gonna land another generational talent. Hell, Bedard had as much hype as anyone since McDavid and even he's fighting tooth and nail because that Hawks org is donkeybrains.

Perhaps Larkin is a touch above whatever ceiling McGroarty has. But i more meant that he'd be our Larkin in the sense that he'd be a good player but not the type of guy who can carry a team, and if we don't get drafting luck and he's our best player you get in that Detroit scenario where you're not good enough to do anything despite having a bit of talent.

And yeah hopefully our scouting is good because our system despite being restocked by Dubas a bit is still pretty barren.

Next year is the point of recognition in the rebuild. Broz, Rutger, St Ivany, a couple wingers like Ponomarev and Koivunen are up next year.

In a perfect world Gruden-Lizotte-Pulju is the 4th line next year but I feel like JP leaves this offseason because of his usage here.

You do save 1.2 million. And it’s easier to root for Gruden.
If we were trying to swing a trade and increase cap space for that missing piece for a playoff run, sure, I can see that. But for this team? Not a real need. I just don't see the fascination for Gruden. He's ok I guess but not someone I'd be clamoring for.

Gruden hasn’t impressed me one iota in his time here. I'd rather see damn near anyone else. Seemingly an incredibly low event player that people will simply compare to Acciari anyways.
Exactly! Couldn't agree more. He's a nothing burger!
