HF Wild absolutely requires a scapegoat to exist, and with Rask and Benn banished its slim pickings to find actual bad players. Goligoski is old and doesn’t play at nearly the same pace or physicality as the rest of the team so his mistakes are always under a microscope.

He's also just nowhere near as good as his stat line indicates.

Based on stats is it a decent cap hit and term. Sure. Does it signal the end of current players under 30 on the team. Possibly. Dumba has to be perplexed by this. However, it might be best for him to get a shot in the arm elsewhere.

True, but this contract is way below what his stat line would normally get.
$2m isn't a bad cap hit, even if I'm not a fan of the player. 2 years isn't ideal for a player his age, but he's not pushing 40 yet, either.

Mostly I don't like how he fits on the roster. I don't like him in the top-4 and the team already has two defenders under contract that I think work better on the bottom-pairing. If they plan to extend Middleton (and I'd hope they do, but you never know) there isn't a place to put Goligoski where I wouldn't rather see a different player.

Curious to know if the extra 32M in cap league wide was a motivation behind the extension or not.

Underrated smart move by the wild here given their cap situation in the coming seasons.

Sign him for 1 year at big money while they could afford it then they’re now giving him an extension at a lesser cap hit.

They turned a 3 year 9 million dollar deal into 2 separate deals where cap is higher in the short term but save them cap when they need it.

But if more teams do this to try to circumvent the cap, it could be a problem in the future.
Lol @ "try to circumvent the cap"
