Confirmed with Link: Wild acquire Gustav Nyquist in exchange for 2026 2nd Round Pick

I wanted the Wild to keep him last time but they couldn't afford him. Now? Unsure he moves the needle much and we gave up a 2nd. When I first saw the news, I was definitely thinking 4th or 5th, so I think it is definitely overpay.

My only question is: why? Trade draft picks with a small percentage chance to work out for solid roster players? Great... if the team has a decent shot of winning in the playoffs or the guy is signed for more than 1 year. But those don't apply. This team isn't winning, so why trade assets like that?

The Jiricek move fits the idea much better. Even if the guy doesn't pan out, he was brought in as a future asset that can theoretically help the team for more than two months in a season they are going nowhere.

That's probably a fair point. GMs are constantly fighting for their own job security.

This has the stink of Leipold looking over BG's shoulder, and BG's ego. Missing the playoffs two years in a row is bad enough, let alone giving up a lottery pick in the Jiricek deal.
 
what is the stat, about 29% of 2nd round picks play 100 plus games in NHL? doesnt mean we should give the picks away though. but its not like we gave away a top prospect. im kinda neutral on trade, hes likely an upgrade but he doesnt really make me say he will be a difference make in playoff series either. Have to think another trade will likely happen before Friday

Do you think I can go back into your post history to see who you thought were contenders and how accurate those assessments were? I don't know how often you write teams off and if it's only the Wild that you make those proclamations about.

The Blue Jackets SWEPT the Lightning who won the Presidents Trophy. I'm not seeing any juggernaut in the Western Conference that are unbeatable even by the Wild.

You say they're going nowhere but there's probably not a major sports league that has more playoff upsets and Cinderella runs than the NHL. When healthy the Wild have been every bit as good as Edmonton, Colorado, Dallas and whoever else

Agree with the above. Lazy, desperate move from a front office that probably isn’t too worried about picks two years from now. They have much more immediate job concerns.
 
I can't see a big plan behind Guerins actions as a GM. I just see a GM who overpays for players he likes and who acts on emotions and not on facts/numbers/stats.

With Ek & Kap out and Gus not playing at his best, this team probably won't make playoffs. A 35 year old vet who's scored 9 goals so far this season won't change that.

I thought there should be a long term plan to attack the top of the league when the dead cap times are over. It feels like there isn't a plan or something like that, Guerin just wanna keep his job.
 
Slight overpayment imo, but not as terrible as it seems, Nyquist can play 20 mins a night almost as a forward and not be as much of a defensive liability as say Marjo or Zucc , and if he plays well like his last stint here, I'd be pleased, most of our teams still constructed the same so he could definitely still have the chemistry with everyone and wont take as long to gel into the system.

The good thing about the lottery is that if they win it, the pick will likely slide to 2026, since the 1st is top-5 protected. Just need to make sure they don't finish 16th in the order. It's literally the only spot that would screw them if they won it.

True. I just don't even consider that to be an option with this team after watching first round exits year after year. Sure, it's possible. But I'm not even giving it a 1%.

To be fair, part of that assumes Kaprizov and JEE are playing at less than full strength if they ever come back. Our two most important players, debatably.

Yeah, I'm a big fan of him. We are born in the same place. In the same hospital, actually.
Last time he was brought here he had been injured for a long time, that's why he was cheaper then.
I don't think he is the final piece to a contender, but surely he is better than anything down in the AHL. He is a very smart player and knows most of the guys on the team, so I'm hoping he can jump right in and make them a little better.
He can kill penalties and has scored 9 shorthanded goals, so I think he can improve the PK.

I would put him with Boldy and Rossi. Give him a shot, he can't be worse than what they usually trot out in that position.
 
i find it hard to believe that CL wasn't onboard with 4 years of meh hockey until after the buyouts dropped off. its next season the clock should start ticking (CL point of view not mine)
