Wil NBA PO end before NHL PO

We just need to change the start date and end date. It is kind of ridiculous that a winter sport might end way later than the summer sport. I would be in much favor of having the Stanley Cup final being played in March. If we could see season starting in late August, we could see this end in early March. It does not make sense to have season starting in October when kids are getting started with their school in late August-early September with finals exam being in May-June. We need the maximum audience at this time frame so if they could end in March, you'd be getting a maximum audience. The goal is to make money so they should aim to achieve that goal.

Just to play devil's advocate:

If you put the Stanley Cup Finals against the middle of the NBA Playoffs, TV ratings will drop 20-25% which doesn't help make money. Blackhawks/Flyers were two strong markets but even they saw a ratings drop when they had a Game 1 conflict against the NBA conference finals.

A few owners don't want early season home games because there's a noticeable drop in attendance with football/baseball conflicts in some markets. Anaheim for instance tends to have Sunday home games so now they have to compete against Rams/Chargers (plus the Lakers who typically have Sunday home games).

I know they will never go for this but a shorter season would do wonders for interest. I feel that is why NFL and soccer are so much more popular in regular season games. NFL with the small schedule makes every game matter that much more. Soccer with no playoffs atleast in the big 5 leagues makes every game important and also has a smallerish schedule. Though that is getting diluted with the ever growing number of tournaments and friendlies.

I've often wondered if one of the leagues will start their schedule earlier, such as mid-September. Might the tv execs pressure one of them to do this?
No. Because the tv execs don’t want the Championship round of one league to go up against earlier rounds of the other. The NHL would obviously be killed by this (it’s a big reason why the league never got the Cup Final on broadcast tv prior to pushing it to June), but it impacts both. Having each Final on separate days benefits both.

Also neither wants to push the start of the season earlier in the fall as the NFL is taking more and more days (just look of the impact of Sunday, Monday and Thursday night Football expansion has had on the World Series).

Am I getting old and my memory is fading or was there a time the NHL playoffs were over before the NBA finals even started?

Seems rather absurd that the league that plays a winter sport is neck and neck with the summer sport.

Maybe this is a drain on NHL ratings too?
Hopefully, the NBA is a joke now.

Yeah, that NFL overlap was something I figured would be a deterrent to starting earlier.

But then the NBA used to start in November and now it starts in October, yes?

I've wondered if the NBA started up in say the 70s or 80s when NFL was taking off, would they have ran their season from January to August to minimize overlap with the NFL?

The scores are definitely crazy with all the 3 pointers they score now
No physical play, flopping, and the major stars playing 50-60 games a year.

The most over rated, over paid, and over opinionated pro athletes in the world today.

Complete turn off for me.

Yeah. I'm not a fan either. I watch college games, CEBL games, and even WNBA gamesb though since I do like the sport per se. Not sure how much I'll watch the WNBA since how they're handling Caitlin Clark is incredibly odd to me.

Stars and Pacers are both in my top 2 of favorite teams in each league since Mike Modano and Reggie Miller were my favorite players as kids, and both have the exact same schedule in their upcoming CF’s. Fortunately I have multiple screens so I can watch them at the same time.

Your favourites are quite geographically dispersed. Move around a lot in your younger days?

No those 2 were simply my favorite players in each league at one point and I’ve had a soft spot for both franchises since. Bolts and Stars were my favorite teams in each conference cause I thought their names were the coolest as a kid.

Interestingly, the Stars and Pacers both making the CF for the 2nd straight year reminds me of 1998-2000, when both made it 3 straight years during the Modano and Miller years.

Well, at least there was one Cup in the mix.

I have a soft spot for the Pacers too; cheering for them to win it all.

But I was also referring to your tagine of Lightning/Mets/Vikings. They're all pretty far apart.

My dad has an interesting dispersion of teams, but it's not quite as drastic. He grew up in northern California (Redding to be specific) and gravitated towards the San Francisco teams (49ers and Giants - he moved away long before the Sharks existed, and doesn't like hockey anyway; not sure how he felt about the Warriors).

Then he went to the University of Texas for his graduate degrees, so he roots for UT in college sports. Wound up in Arizona, landing a job at Arizona State University. He always feels conflicted when ASU plays Texas in anything. He also got into the Phoenix-area teams as they came along (except for the Coyotes of course, since he doesn't like hockey).

On a side note, when doing his undergraduate degree, he spent his first year at BYU. He chose BYU solely because there was good skiing nearby. According to how the story goes, he says he got kicked out after the first year, but I've never asked him why. Finished up his undergraduate degree at Sacramento State, but as far as I know he doesn't care about Sacramento State in college sports.

That's a nomad!

Reminds me of my FIL. Born in Alberta, joined the Air Force, bounced between Alberta, Saskatchewan and Ottawa. Went private sector and moved to Toronto and then Arizona.

He developed an affinity for the Coyotes and Cardinals (he even has two Coyotes jerseys) but is a Sens fan. He was in Toronto for 10 years but still detests the Leafs lol

Interestingly though, he's a CFL fan but the Redblacks are his team rather than Calgary (he was born south of it) or even the Saskatchewan Roughriders

He never was interested in baseball or basketball.

Lightning: found their name cool, as I said in my last post.

Mets: Found it cool that NY had another baseball team, and I was a huge Mike Piazza fan. Mets are my favorite NL team, Mariners my favorite AL team (from Seattle). A joke I have is the Mets are more popular in Tampa than the Rays one time someone asked about the Bolts/Mets combo.

Vikings: UW Huskies football fan, and I found the Vikings to be the NFL version with their colors. Both of their rivals (Green Bay Packers and Oregon Ducks) share colors too. I'll cheer for the Seahawks when they're not playing the Vikings though.

It's interesting how we as fans can choose a favourite team for so many reasons- including thr uniforms.

I was an Oilers and then a Kings fan because I was a Gretzky fan above all else then I became a Senators fan once they got a team.

I was a Rough riders fan before I was a Redblacks fan because they were a small town team with a passionate fan base.

Steelers fan because of the history and yep- the colours.

Well tonight was fun for me to say the least. I had actually turned off the screen that had Pacers/Knicks on to only watch Oilers/Stars until I saw the Pacers were only down 5. Funny how that game ended up close while the Stars won going away.

I switched over to the Knicks/Pacers just in time to see Haliburton doing the choke sign. Guy thinks he's Reggie Miller lol

After that EN...no point in sticking around Dallas/Edmonton

Man. 4 goals in 1 period.

I would rather get the Stanley Cup Final in February just before March Madness and all the hoopla in April. I would suggest holding the outdoor playoff games or having it being in Cup Final series outdoor for 7 games, massive money maker right there or holding playoff games outdoors from mid-January to March. By then, the league would have to build their hockey only stadium outdoors that can hold 30,000 without a roof. Getting back to the roots of hockey being outdoor would be the biggest draw and biggest attraction for Canada and US during winter imho. No matter, if there is a snowy day, it draws people to watch the game even if you are not a fan of that certain team.

That would be a scheduling nightmare with weather. If it rains that would shift the entire playoff schedule.

What makes Basketball a “summer sport”?

Not a big deal. You put in extra day off to compensate for it and have a back to back games if necessary.

It doesn't need ice and basketball is a summer sport to be played outdoors. 1936 basketball Olympic was played outdoors.

Ironically enough, when Naidmith created the game it was as an indoor sport so hus students would have some kind of game to play during the winter.

And while the origins are unclear, it's reasonable to say that hockey was originally an outdoor sport. One theory I've read is that it derived from playing a vaguely "stick and (playing object)" game that was played on frozen canals in the Netherlands.

And the first rules for the modern forerunner were in Montreal I believe.

It is kind of funny though that even basketball league runs in the winter yet basketball is in the summer Olympics.
