Canadians could not score more than 2 goals in regulation last tournament if the opponent put up any fight at all. Even failed to score in the first period of the tournament vs. Norway.
If Stamkos is injured, we will have 2/7 of our top scorers in Sochi. In an elite tournament vs. elite goalies and d-men, just bringing good offensive players is not enough. (We have dozens of 'good' offensive players to choose from in Canada). You have to bring the best.
Over the past 2 years only 7 players have maintained a PPG , most of them won't be in Sochi. The top ES scoring list is also going to have a number of absences. Top PP scoring list will have Giroux missing. And if you look at the top scorers presently this season, guys like Thornton, Giroux, Neal, Hall, MSL, and others will be left home for lesser candidates.
One of the best roleplayers in the tournament last time around was Eric Staal, and he also happens to be heavily outscoring guys like Nash.
Confusing picks in some respects, but ultimately lack of offence will be the problem - barring a goaltending collapse which could literally happen to any team at any time. Its hockey.
