Why was Sam Bennett only traded for 2 seconds?

The offer was more than fair for where he was at time of the trade. I remember the debates on a Puljujarvi swap. Sometimes it turns out a player needs a change of scenery, an opportunity. Bennett and Florida both greatly benefited on the trade. Bennett wasn't looking he'd be that same player in Calgary so they didn't get a bad deal on him at all.

In Puljujarvi's case even an ideal situation seems to not be making much of a difference. He's actually producing much worse on the Hurricanes than he was even in Edmonton's bottom 6. Granted Edmonton held him long enough that we got zero return on him but that's the risk Calgary would have been taking had they not moved him when they did.

At the time he was averaging like 12 goals per season, so two second rounders was fair I guess.

The real question is why was he never able to thrive in Calgary?

This.

No one questioned the trade at the time. Then he was given a real opportunity and showed his worth.

Similar to Montour.

Two seconds is fair value at the time, Florida paid a price which implied an untapped upside left in him. After a 36 pt rookie campaign he didn't hit 30 after that. Seven years remived from his draft, doesn't carry the same trade value.

He did demonstrate his ability to step up and elevate his game in the playoffs. Ironically I'd always imagined he would be the type of player the Leafs should gone after when he was on the outs with the Flames.

What's hilarious to me about Sam Bennet's trajectory is that he's considered this tough guy in the playoffs now but in my mind he'll always be the prospect who couldn't do a single pull up in his combine.

Pull ups are essentially useless for hockey, though. You could say that if they can do many pullups, they've wasted their body's resources on building muscle that's not needed.

He's a gamer but his production hasn't risen to anymore than a 2nd or 3rd line tweener. The kind of guy you'd love on your team but not one you're going to sell the farm for.
He's put up 50g 104p in 144gp, with minimal time on the top PP unit.

That's roughly a 30 goal 60 point pace while bringing a ton of other stuff to the table.

He's very clearly better than a 3rd line player.

It’s hilarious because I thought that was good value of him at the time. Sam Bennett has always had tremendous skill. But it was very clear that he needed to GTFO of Calgary. As soon as he left, he became the player he obviously had the potential to be.

There are 31 other teams in the league that would love to have him. I’m really happy for his success and I think he still hasn’t touched his offensive ceiling.

I wouldn’t sell the farm for him, but I’d absolutely over spend on him if I was a team making a playoff push. Minus last year, hes a guy who shows up in the playoffs.

At the time he was traded, he was seen as a bottom six wing who added a bit of jam.

He became a legit 2C after getting to Florida.

He paces at 60 points a year while playing with 100+ point players. The problem is that he never actually plays enough games to get 60 points a year.

It's not really about the actual relevance of a pull up to hockey. It's just amusing that the narrative back then about Sam Bennet as a prospect was that' he's weak and will struggle in the nhl physically.

Look at him now.
