Why was Sam Bennett only traded for 2 seconds? | HFBoards - NHL Message Board and Forum for National Hockey League

Why was Sam Bennett only traded for 2 seconds?

Because he was in the wrong place at the wrong time, sometimes it happens. Wrong coach, wrong team, wrong culture. Many people have always said, including posters in here, that he needs to move when he was in Calgary. And they were right. They tanked his worth with their system, because nobody wants to be wrong and they decided to bang their head into a wall instead.

Because he was pretty underwhelming in Calgary during the regular season and had a knack for taking at least 1 dumb offensive zone penalty every 2 games. However he was always a guy that turned up his game in the playoffs even as a Flame. Him returning 2 2nds at all when he only had 24 points in his previous 90 regular season games was solely driven by the fact that he had 13 points in his last 15 playoff games.

Flames fans and their GM never appreciated him, Lomberg or Tkachuk.
Panthers fans are very thankful though.

Not even close to being true. Fans always loved Bennett but wanted more from the highest pick in franchise history. He was always great in the playoffs but left more to be desired in the regular season. He was pigeon-holed as a LWer even though he was supposed to be a center and would take stupid penalties often.

He was traded because he was pretty much the odd man out with the expansion draft and he already requested a trade. It was rescinded after Sutter got here but Treliving dealt him anyway.

Bennett said the Panthers fans are the best fans he's ever had, he wouldn't lie.

What makes this even crazier is that Flames really didnt try Bennett-Tkachuk together at all (that's what I've been told by Flames fans)

In Florida there always together when Bennett isnt injured or waiting murder trial

Guy is a playoff warrior, knows how to get under the skin of his opponents and is an extremely useful top-6 player for the Panthers. How did he get traded for 2 second round picks, and why wasn‘t there any offers better than that?

He wasnt that good in Calgary.
But almost everyone thought he would explode if he changed scenario.
Dont know why a limited in skill small guy was drafted 4th overall. That was a bad move. But better than drafting Dal Colle. Scouting was bad even to 2014.

Bennett was getting 3rd line C minutes in Calgary before traded. Coach/management can bring downfall of many teams.

Because he hadn't done anything to be worth more than that. He didn't flourish until he left Calgary. If the Flames would have used him properly he probably would never have needed to be traded.

He never lived up to the 4th overall hype in Calgary. A change of scenery helped him tremendously, but in reality still hasnt lived up to the 4th overall hype. People just forget about that stuff over time

It was weird he ended up being the Flames best forward / player most of the time he was in the playoffs but then would be banished back to the bottom lines when the regular season rolled around again

Not to diminish Sam, but still so thankful the Oilers passed on him for Leon.

it's like leaving home to make your fortune. some people need to get away from their past to reinvent themselves.

it is surprising teams tend to dig in and hang on to players like this way too long to get a good return .

Because that's what he's worth
The had 1 season at 36 points. All of the others were under 30.

One of those types of deals where a change of scenery was needed. See in time what becomes of those 2 second round draft picks.

He's a gamer but his production hasn't risen to anymore than a 2nd or 3rd line tweener. The kind of guy you'd love on your team but not one you're going to sell the farm for.
