Olympics: Why was Canada so nonchalant in its Sochi victory?

Well, I admit that even I was worried, but I knew that the games against the Swiss and the US were just a bad luck. We won the third period against the US 14-4, and against the Swiss 18-3, that's saying something. It wasn't like the team played badly. They just needed a bit of a luck.

That wasn't bad luck compared to the Gold medal game. I have never seen Canada play that poorly, ever in game. Never saw Broduer play that bad either, it was brutal.

Turned it around when it counted and that's all that matters.

I don't really know why you're trying to justify their play four years later.

That's not what is the post about. It's about that the people were worried, but not THAT worried, because there was no reason to.

Did you watch the 2006 olympics?

Well, the team outshot the opponent twice as much, and could've won 5-2 if not for Hiller and Miller. And Brodeur, yes. But that was rather one player, even though I think it's always about the players in front of the goalie, not just the goaltender. It was a bad luck, at least that it seemed to me. Yes, they didn't score the goals, which is obviously the most important, but if we are talking about the play, when you beat the opposite team 46-23 (Switzerland) and 45-23 (the US) on shots, I wouldn't call that playing poorly - and it's not just about the shots. As I said, the chances were there, and did I mention what the shots were in the third periods of each game?

But if it's your opinion, ok then, you know mine.

Lol @ Canadians who still think Russia is the big rival. Russia isn't even the best European team.

Look at the boys after the third goal. With Sweden's offense partially depleted due to injury/drug failure (or whatever it turned out to be in the end) they knew the game was over.

That sort of reaction has happened several times with teammates when you cruise towards a win with 12 minutes or so to go.

You're right. The USA is easily now Canada's biggest rival in international play but the history of Canada vs Russia will never be extinguished

Poor Sweden. They are always sold short.

Only because they are neighbours not becsuse they are better than anyone else.

But it is funny that Canada claim they #1 still they want rather compete with teams with historic rivality than teams that are actually best. Poor Canada.

I can assure you that Sweden is not our biggest rival. We certainly aren't rivals with teams who lose to Belarus. :sarcasm:

I don't see a rivalry between Sweden or Canada for a long time unless Sweden and Canada are both in gold medal games quite a bit together. They're in different continents, they rivalry has no history unlike Russia or USA.

It's not because Sweden isn't good enough.

We want to beat everyone else's best. I've been entertaining swedes all week, wonderful group of people, I don't think you represent anyone but your own pathetic self.

Canada beat the snot out of Sweden. There's no question who is #1 right now.

Couple of reasons:

1. Not a NA crowd - less energy to feed off of with fewer pro-Canadian fans in the stands

2. Not a traditional rival - less energy to feed off of competitively

3. Not a game in doubt or a high energy game

4. Russia was not in the final - if they were the crowd would have been fired up and you can bet the players would have taken greater delight in scoring in an "away" game atmosphere

5. Game was essentially won in the early morning in NA, and some players knew they had to be on a flight back to NA to get back to work the same day

Is it really a question? In 2010 the team went bonkers cause they won a nailbiter in OT. 2014 was a cakewalk (other than that crazy Latvia game!). They knew they had this one in the bag. I didn't celebrate much after this win either, I guess I just kind of expected it.
