Shocker. If the Oilers had a competent management, they'd probably have a similar record to the Flames. It all starts up top, and that's why the Oilers will continue to fail until that is changed.

Without even reading the article I could have told you that. When the Sabres started the rebuild they had some very good assets that they traded for Prospects and picks, when Edmonton started the rebuild they had nothing. No star players to trade and a weak prospect pool. Sabres then used their high draft picks on centers and defenceman and now have one of the best prospect pools in the league. Edmonton was loading up with wingers and only now are starting to develop good centers and defenceman. It isn't even worth mentioning how bad Edmonton's management is.

I've heard LA rebuild wrong for years and then 2 cups came along. Islanders also. All it takes is one good off-season.

Sabres have spent most of their high picks of defensemen (Ristolainen, Zadorov, Pysyk, McCabe) and centers (Reinhart, Grigorenko, Girgensons).

Edmonton mostly picked wingers with their high picks, which is an odd foundation on which to try to rebuild.

Couldn't be more different in approach. The only thing they have in common is that both teams are currently bad.

It definitely just doesn't come by getting a butt-load of top 5 picks. It comes from a competent GM who is willing to make a big trade or signing when the time is right.

Drafting down the middle and on the backend is a big, big deal too. Additionally, ensuring that picks that aren't 1st rounders are developed properly. None of the two 2010's dynasty teams (Chicago & LA) win the cups without these big processes.

Buffalo might very well end up like the Oilers; I don't think anyone can tell yet. There's still a few painful years in front of the Buffalo faithful, unfortunately.

Did they draft differently? Oh yes, smart two-way skilled centers and big dmen versus small skilled forwards.

Are they both rushing players up? There's some parallels here, I'm happy they sent Reino down; but they are giving big minutes to RR and Zadorov... who while absolutely capable, look like 20 year olds out there A LOT. Both could have used more seasoning and time away from one of the worst teams, ever.

Are they surrounding players better? The Sabres at least brought in pieces this year to take a lot of the damage away from the kids. JG and Gionta are definitely guys who can take some abuse (and oh are they taking it this season), Edmonton was generally unwilling to spend money on any kind of actual NHLer.

Who knows at the end of the day. Having one of Eichel or McDavid would definitely help move this team forward; but it's certainly not the be-all-end-all of the rebuild.

LA never rebuilt wrong.. Lombardi came in and executed his plan perfectly. They bottomed out for Doughty and Schenn, they stockpiled prospects and traded them off for legitimate NHLers.

Oilers can't draft. Basically nobody outside of their top 10 picks has made the NHL.

Only players i can think of from the past 10 drafts are Dubnyk, Cogliano, Petry and Eberle with Klefbom, Reider, Marincin and Lander with a shot also. That's a pretty bad list for 10 years of draft picks.

Sabres have the pieces and prospects where if they pick up McDavid or even Eichel, they're gonna be a playoff team real quick. I think Sabres fans know that. It sucks hard now, but the future is pretty bright.

Good post.

You build a winning team from back forward, and the middle outward.

Keith, Seabrook Toews for example, for those of who remember when CHI was really bad.

I'm sure every fanbase that has a horrible team hopes it won't be like the Oilers. The Oilers probably hoped they wouldn't be like the Oilers years ago. You never know until they actually start winning.

Yep. I'll quote an old post of mine from a different thread:

I've said this before but I'll say it again since nobody has mentioned it in this thread: Edmonton's biggest problem is that their drafting after the first round has been really sucky. Everybody is so focused on the top first round picks, but you can't be successful if you don't draft quality players in later rounds. For example:

LA: Toffoli (2); Vey (4); Nolan (7); Voynov (2); Simmonds (2); Martinez (4); King (4); Quick (3)
Blackhawks: Saad (2); Shaw (5); Pirri (2); Kruger (5); Hjalmarsson (4)
Boston: Lucic (2); Marchand (3); Sobotka (4); Versteeg (5); Bergeron (2)
Montreal: Gallagher (5); Subban (2); Latendresse (2); D'Agostini (6); Kostitsyn (7); Emelin (3); Grabovski (5); Streit (9); Lapierre (2); Plekanec (3); Ribeiro (2); Beauchemin (3); Markov (6); Ryder (8)

Who has Edmonton drafted after the 1st round?

I don't think I've ever seen anyone on here ever say Buffalo was going to end up being like Edmonton.

I've heard a pretty good amount. But who cares? Those people don't know what they're talking about.

This kind of just seems like kicking the oilers while they're still down.

If the Oilers had competent management, right now I would put them in the running for the division title.
It's been 5 years since Hall was drafted. Three #1 overall picks in a row. That should move you up the standings.
