Why not do a 32 team world cup?

How is that supposed to work? These are games like Netherlands vs Canada, Spain vs Finland, Serbia vs USA, Croatia vs Sweden, UAE vs Czechia. That makes zero sense. The top 6 win hands down without any effort. If anyone in the top 6 is in the mood to play, then it goes towards 20:0, 30:0 or higher.

24 teams

4 team by group - 3 games

Round 16 - ranking game for losers

7 games for everyone. Small nations play a single match out of reach and are exposed in the biggest international event every year.

Same format for teams 25 to 48.

Creation of a 3rd division until reaching 72.

Just 1 promotion/relegation.

How many teams play at the World Championships? 16? (* Sincere questions. *)

That seems like the limit for the foreseeable future.

You're overestimating the parity in international hockey; it's not even close to the parity of international soccer. You think Canada beating up on, say, Great Britain at the WC is bad? That's nothing. As you get into lower levels, there's even less parity. Often you'll see things like the 28th ranked international team beating the 34th ranked team 12-0. The teams in Division II would get destroyed by most teams in Division IB, who in turn generally get creamed by teams in Division !A, and those teams are significantly worse than even the worse teams in the Elite division (the teams that get beaten up on by the big nations's B-teams every year at the World Championships).

32 teams is a non-starter. Do we really need to see, say, Finland against the United Arab Emirates?

You have a good point, but perhaps we could make it work by giving the top 8 teams a bye to round of 16 and let the rest battle and have perhaps a mercy rule of a game stopping at 10 goals? I saw a reddit post which had a really good 32 team world cup concept. Are we allowed to send reddit links here? I'm new.

The problem is that the top 8 teams are not responsible for the lack of parity. Let's say you do that, and create 6 roughly equal groups of 4 teams for the group phase of this hypothetical World Cup. You would wind up with groups like, for example, Denmark, Italy, China, Israel. Those teams are all pretty far apart in terms of strength; all 6 games in this group could very well be blowouts, or at least decisive wins. What would be the point of that? And who would watch that?

And sure I figure you can post a reddit link here.

A qualifying tournament similar to what they do for the Olympics was brought up when they tried to do this before

24 teams sounds even good.

4 team by the groups - 3 games by team in the groups.

Round 16.

Quarter finals.

Semi.

Bronze game.

Final game.

4 promotion/relegation.

Russia and Belarus were banned from this year's World Championships. What team finished 31st? The United Arab Emirates. And they beat the team that was 32nd (Israel) by five goals. Serbia (30th this year) lost to Japan and China by five goals each last year.

if you formatted a 32 team world cup with 8 best getting their own groups, then filling them in order from worst to best.

Just goes to show how goofy this would be.

Group A
Canada
Iceland
China
Hungary

Group B
Finland
Israel
Lithuania
Great Britain

Group C
Czechia
Croatia
Japan
Kazakhstan

Group D
Switzerland
Serbia
Romania
France

Group E
USA
Spain
Korea
Austria

Group F
Sweden
Netherlands
Poland
Norway

Group G
Germany
Estonia
Italy
Denmark

Group H
Slovakia
Ukraine
Slovenia
Latvia

I don't think I need to see Canada and USA beat the living piss out of Estonia or whoever. The disparity gets so big so fast, Thailand who is #43 on the list for example beat 52nd ranked Kuwait 57-0 at a U18 tournament a couple years ago.

It would get really, really ugly past like 18/20. I like what they did at the Worlds with team Europe though and would be interested to see them try to do more hybrid type teams like that

If we take this as an example, playing a country loke Canada could give the Israel players some experience and help them grow and come back stronger no?
To use Israel as an example, didn't they build their first ice rink less than a decade ago? And they're 33rd in the world lol. We're just so so far from anything even resembling parity

I mean at first sure it could get ridiculous but what if a random teams make a surprising run? It could definitely make it more popular in the country also if Canada for example goes 10-0 up against a very weak country midway trough the 2nd it's not like they'll try to embarrass them, they will show mercy and the margin won't be absolutely insane.
That sounds like a joke and does nothing to grow the game and do you even realize how bad the 16-32 countries would be?

Woof, that’s some thin pickings after the top 8-10.

Also, Sweden is ranked laughably low on this list.

World championship already does it properly with 5 divisions. One massive tourney is such a joke players wouldn’t even go. Guys aren’t going to risk getting severely injured by a non name player trying to make a name for himself in the history books.

Nhl would never allow players to go either

Any big hockey world cup is pointless unless NHL players are involved. So the best we will get is the Olympics where they have the top 12 ranked teams compete. A 32 team tournament is just a waste of time since those bottom 20 teams stand zero chance of winning a medal.
