Last year WJC was arranged in a bubble. This year its some "semi-bubble" and the stupidest thing of all - the teams are staying at hotels open for everyone??? Why? How come it is arranged so bad this year?

Because IIHF is dumb and didn’t adapt to the new variant

IIHF or the country arranging? Hotels beeing open to public is hardly an IIHF call? Why the f*** cant you book 2 hotels and have 1 floor for every team or something like that and have it shut down for the public?

A bubble is hella difficult to put together and things were looking better before Omicron started surging the number of positives, particularly with vaccinated individuals.

Well, the part that teams are beeing located in hotels where ordinary ppl stays too was pretty bad. They were supposed to have a floor for themselves but the hotel Team Finland uses actually rented out rooms from the same floor too. It was on the news a few days ago...

The IIHF is in charge of the tournament, it's their rules, people should get the facts before spouting off.

The Omicron variant was just really bad timing.

Because stupidity.

Serious question though: Was it the fact Omicron wasn't here in early December, or the test they did for it didn't exist?

I mean someone came back from south africa and now its across an entire country in 3 weeks? Like I don't know anyone who travels often, but omicron is somehow in my small part of the country and cases are going up.

So is it a case of they have a new testing sequence of the samples and its positive due to this?

Omicron was first detected in South Africa in July. The WEF has since edited the article written in July so you can't see any evidence of it anymore. I have screenshots, though.

I sort of agree. But, they aren't going to convince a hotel chain to cancel a whole bunch of bookings to accommodate them last minute. While they are a major purchase, it's essentially a one off event. Hotel chains aren't going to alienate potential returning customers for them.

They had to plan for full-scale isolated hotels to begin with. This isn't a pivot they could make in mid-December.

Yes, bubbles are a big logistical challenge (not to mention really expensive) and not really something that can be thrown together last minute.

Even with Delta it should have been a major consideration considering this tournament is in peak transmission season.

Yeah, and if they were trying to figure this out in July/August I honestly wonder how many hotels would have been receptive to doing this. Now, everything can be solved with money in this case. But, I can see many hotel chains being way less receptive to this than pre-vaccine. I think places were fairly optimistic about making money over holiday traveling this year.

I'd bet a pretty dollar that this tournament lost money last year with no crowds and the extra costs to put a bubble together. This thing is a cash cow for the IIHF/TSN/Hockey Canada, they held it last year even under the circumstances for normalcy/to keep it on the public's radar as an annual event, but they didn't want another year of not being able to milk this thing for whatever they can.

Because money. IIHF and Hockey Canada wanted to maximize their profits.

Include Edmonton and Red Deer. I think Hockey Canada gets their money regardless. I am sure they have to pay for the TC costs, but other than that I am not sure.

Cities bid on this tournament, so I am sure HC and the IIHF covered their nut.

But that is speculation.

I'm sure it's heavily linked to ticket sales and concession revenues. The only locked in amount is likely the television rights.

It really isn't. I am an executive in the global events industry. I've been a part of organising a handful of much larger bubbles during Covid. I estimate it would have cost about 500k-600k extra. Not much considering this tournament profits 10's of millions of dollars in Canada.

I honestly think when the decision was made that everything was good.

3 weeks ago my kids were in school and I had zero issues
I was playing my beer league hockey and no fear at all
Post game pint at pub.. no problem

2 weeks ago, I was a little jittery

Last week I double masked to get alcohol and hide my family.lol

HOnestly, if this tournament was held 2 weeks ago it would've gone off without a hitch.

Having said that.. it's a cashcow and sacred holiday tradition for many.. should've been bubbles. hell, rent out a uni residence wing and do it there. I'm positive they could've find space for these atheltes that doesn't involve people booking a room on the same floor and partying.

I get it'd be difficult for a guy like me to book at a hotel for an entire team etc. but an event organizer? A professional? For Hockey Canada and the sacred Jrs (not sarcasm, I love this tourney)... that is not that challenging task IMO

All it takes is money and there is lots to go around... those adds on the boards aren't for Mike's hardware shop in Red Deer.
