Why is McDavid wearing 17?

Are all of the numbers low? Some coaches don't like having super high numbers on their players so they're all like 35 and under.

Anyone know why Connor McDavid is number 17 instead of 97?

It's the number they gave him at his first international tournament U18s a year and half ago, so it's his number. We'll see if it changes once he gets to the senior team at some point in the future.

BTW. He played one hell of a tourney.

He's 17 years old. A trustworthy source* told me that he intends to change his number every year on his birthday once he hits the NHL. This both to show his superiority over every single NHL player before him, but also so he remembers how old he is.

Because high numbers are for damn hippies and punk kids. Right, old influential people in Canadian hockey?

You had me going for a second

Either the IIHF or HC have a rule about high jersey numbers as I can't think of any over the past few years higher than 30, excluding goalies.

I thought everyone knew this.

Goals in OHL Cup with Toronto Marlboros 11/12: 11
Goals in OHL 12/13: 25
Goals in OHL 13/14: 28
Goals in OHL 14/15: 16

97 - (11 + 25 + 28 + 16) = 17

Because in the 5th season, kids find their number :sarcasm:

It'll only make sense if you've seen the commercial.
