Why doesn't the NHL have stars with personality like LeBron James or Conor McGregor?

I mean stars who act like stars. LeBron calls himself The King; why can't McDavid do that? I would love to see an active NHL superstar start firing on Twitter the way McGregor does. Go to a presser in a three piece suit and sunglasses and start talking shit. Spice the game up a bit, you know? Too many of these guys are scripted ChatCPT robots and I can see why it's hard for the casual fan to get invested.

What do you think? Is it just a cultural thing with hockey where everyone has to speak in tired cliches and never, ever rock the boat? Why are there so few entertaining characters in the game?

Because star hockey players can get punched in the mouth like they’re anyone else.

Any stars that remotely show that type of personality at a young age (eg Subban, Ovechkin, etc) get roasted by the media for being cocky, not a team player, etc.

NHL teams/agents actively train hockey players to give dull interviews, and while the media sometimes complains about lack of personality, they certainly discourage personality whenever it shows itself.

we had Sean Avery and that was embarrassing enough

OP's point was to get the fans fired up and invested in the sport... Sean Avery is the opposite and more like a meme. Like a worse version of Mario Ballotelli does thing.

McGregor is a clown who molested old man because he didn't drink his wisky. There is enough f***ed up people in ice hockey without persons like him.

Whoever fights monsters should see to it that in the process he does not become a monster. And if you gaze long enough into an abyss, the abyss will gaze back into you.

Yeah, no thanks, becasue 'personality' 9 times out of 10 actually means dick head or bitch depending on sex.

We see the nice rise of womans basketball and a nice increase in popularity then the 1st thing we see is them acting like a bunch of tools to each other. Zero respect for the opposition. Hockey has already taken steps in that direction already which is a pity.

lebron is lame. Other than like barkely and kenny the jet so are most nba players. "me! me! everyone look at me!" it's all so cringey. And baseball players putting on funny hats after hitting homeruns lol I really hope the NHL doesn't sink to the level of props. Stick with humble and classy and likable instead of the tik tok crowd's idea of "personality".

Because huge majority of hockey fans bitch and moan about literally everything, and then go on to call others p***yes and softies. Why would you let your personality show when you already know someone is gonna get hurt by what you say no matter what it is and then chase you out of town?

It's a fair point that basketball attracts charismatic athletes.

McGregor is kind of a one off. There are other brash fighters, but no one else has combined his skill and charisma in MMA history.

He has about as much charisma as a stray dog. Or Donald Trump. I don't think charisma was the word you were looking for.

Cheal Sonnen has good oratory skills and a personality. Lots of MMA fighters have personality.

Do people actually watch Lebron? He’s nothing like McGregor and actually much closer to a typical boring NHLer in terms of personality.
Yeah Lebron isn't really much of a personality. He's just a big brand because basketball is built all around star players being brands.. And he was the best player for like a decade plus, so it's not shocking his name is more known than most.

It's like asking "why doesn't the NHL have guys like Lionel Messi" when most NHL players are probably more outgoing and interesting than that Argentine introvert. It's just that they aren't the dominant player in the most popular sport in the world.
