Sam is a gem. When opposing fans also actually like his broadcasting, you know you have a good broadcaster. Too bad he's getting old. Apart from his enthusiasm, I like that he at least tries to call the game objectively and usually with good success. He praises opponents when they deserve it and he doesn't sound like his dog died just because the opposing team scores.

By now it's too late for national stuff, but I heard Sam Rosen many times in the NFL too. Suppose he does even more sports?

Seems to me, he's more of a "local"/team-focused commentator.

Yeah he has done NFL games for a long time and is very good at it.

I love Sam and still think he's great. He's old, though, and often times misses things happening and it takes him several seconds to realize a goal was scored or whatever. He obviously not as sharp in that respect as he once was, but who would be?

He started with boxing. It's funny too because he was never a big advocate for fighting in hockey. It was more obvious back when JD used to get all revved up by on-ice fisticuffs. To me Mr. Rosen is the quintessential professional broadcaster. If anyone heard the ridiculous play-by-play of Boston v. Washington from NESN last night, the difference obvious. Rosen has great pipes too. The more heralded national NHL voice sounds nasal to me. Annoying even. Sam is reassuring. Simply the best.

Listening to other announcers call players on their team by their first name (looking at you, Daneyko and Goring), get upset when the other team scores and complaining about penalties they don’t agree with makes you appreciate Sam and Joe even more.

They’ve been noticeably rusty this season (and I don’t expect that to get better unfortunately), but they’re truly the best of the best.

I just came here to say he’s an absolute class act.

The day we are listening to John Giannone or Joe Micheletti anymore than we already have to will be absolutely gut wrenching. Yes, I understand Sam is a play-by-play announcer and overall may have nothing to do to with the fact.

I listened to the play by play yesterday in the Boston game and I'm conflicted. Jack Edwards is an unprofessional douchebag but I find him entertaining.

The Sam haters are going to realize how good he is once he's gone. He's been the voice of the Rangers for most of our lifetimes. He was already on when I started watching 35 years ago. I'm dreading him hanging it up.

who the hell would hate Sam. he's a legend. he is well known for the right reasons. it'll be sad when he retires. maybe he'll join JD in management with the Rangers.

Not just rusty, but Sam hasn't adjusted great to calling the road games from the studio. I think that's totally understandable.

That and he gets stuck reading from his card when big things are transpiring on the screen.

Side note- I really hope it's Kenny Albert and not Giannonne that takes over when Sam retires. Nothing personal against John, I just like Kenny's PBP a lot more.
I love Kenny but he doesn't have the hype voice. If the hype moment comes up, his voice lags behind while guys like Rosen and even Doc are in sync with it.

Sam is engrained into my childhood and upbringing. Even JD feels like a dad figure to me. It's going to suck when he leaves, even though he's struggling now at some points.

I honestly hope Vally becomes a bigger part of the production. Vally is BY FAR, the Rangers and MSGs best asset.

Because he's not recognizable like Emerick and NBC has prioritized that and/or being a former player pretty clearly for quite some time.

TV/Radio rights is also a weird thing contractually so I'd imagine that factors in somewhere. Good. More for us. f*** everyone else.

IMO, part if what is contributing to what appears to be Sam falling off is that they aren't in the arena calling these games. They are looking at a monitor and bound by the shots the camera is taking. That's a huge difference and it shows.

I like Sam but still long for the great Jim Gordon and the big whistle. Speaking of announcers, the great voice of Dan Kelly

Sam did a little Fox nationally in the 90s, and up into recently did playoffs on radio for Westwood One. Even when OLN first launched in 2005 he did some games on there with JD

I don't think there's anything contract wise to prevent him from doing games nationally if he wanted to. Kenny does NFL nationally on Fox as well as NHL on NBC, and radio for NYR.
