Why does TSN block viewing of videos outside of Canada?

I am still trying to figure out why the NHL blocks games on regional TSN feeds. Actually I know they want me to pay for the NHL network but that ain't happening.

I have 5 TSN channels as part of my cable package yet I can't watch the jets/oilers game because I am in the Canucks broadcast territory. All the NHL is doing is alienating fans.

Another example...tonight's flames/coyotes game is on sports net west. It is not available in my region. There are NO other games being televised.

I received a free NHL GameCenter season with my phone plan from Rogers. I have yet to be able to not see a game I'd want to watch. I like it so much I might actually start paying for it next season.

Its contracts. Canadian isp pay huge dollars for their internet channels just like the states do. Canadian isp cant touch the huge market in the states because of exclusive rights here. Its not financial feasible, of course, but they never had a horse in the race to begin with.

Theres much better avenues for NHL news then TSN anywho.

It is particularly prevalent in the broadcasting of sports events, although other television or radio programs may be blacked out as well. Most blackout policies serve to protect local broadcasters (primarily regional sports networks) from competition by "out-of-market" networks that carry different teams, by only allowing viewers to watch non-national telecasts of teams within their designated markets (with television providers blacking out regional telecasts of teams that are outside of their market; in turn, encouraging viewers to purchase subscription-based out-of-market sports packages), and by allowing teams to black out national telecasts of games that are also being shown by a local broadcaster. By contrast, the blackout policies of the National Football League serve to encourage attendance to games instead—by only allowing them to be broadcast on television in a team's designated market if a certain percentage of their tickets are sold prior to the game

I'll leave this here

Heh, you aren't missing much with American Netflix... we don't even have Batman: the Animated Series. :(

CDN Netflix has all the best cartoons.

Well it pisses me off something awful. I grew up in Canada and TSN. I prefer it and canadian broadcasts to american ones. It makes me feel like part of me is still home.

Yet they wont let me watch video. Im going to write TSN a letter asking if I can PAY for a small monthly prescription so I can view the TSN website in its entirety.

It is a terrible website now. Why bother.

TSN took a huge hit after losing Onrait and O'Toole but they are still miles ahead of Sportsnet, so I still watch them.

Oh for sure, my father has Rogers(pretty much full pkg) and he gave me his Rogers ID so I can watch the Leaf games on TSN/Sportsnet. The streaming quality is soo soo soo much better with TSN.

Where's your empirical data to back this up?

I used to be a big Jay and Dan fan. When they left, I failed to miss a Jay and Dan podcast for the first year of being in LA. However, over time, their style has grown old (and to some extent, annoying). With the new wave of anchors (Tessa Bonhomme, Kara Wagland, Natasha Staniszewski, Derek Taylor, etc.) Sportscentre is a far superior show with a plethora of beeming personalities.

It is all because of NAFTA. The ads on website a are a form of international commerce if they are accessed by those outside of the country. Free trade, tariffs and quotas and the complexities of international law.

Because TSN didn't pay the NHL to broadcast those games nationally.

In the future though the NHL should sell the national rights to all Canadian team games.
