Why do we have 3 Goalies with 2 0n the way?

He was more than likely worried that the UFA goalies in FA would want multi year contracts. With Petr only signed for 1 year remaining he doesn't have to potentially block Cossa if they feel he needs 1 more year to marinate. He is looking to the future. Might not be the best option. But he is forward thinking. Doesn't want to sign someone for more term than he feels is necessary.
Which is also putting a lot of eggs in the basket of assuming that Cossa will become the clear cut answer in net. (And that the team winning is still less important than the kids developing.)

I'm not saying I doubt Cossa. But it's well within the realm of possibility that he tops out as average in the NHL. And that kids like Danielson and ASP also become good but not great NHL players. And Detroit has a roster with a ceiling of second round exit.

There has to be balance. You can't empty the cupboard of all capital the second you're not a cellar dweller, but you also can't keep hoarding picks forever, assume that all your own players will pan out, and you'll be good enough to contend for the Cup without breaking some eggs.

It's not the time yet. When Cossa, Danielson, and ASP are on the team it will be then when he starts to make playoff moves. If people can set their fan(atic) bias aside and look at it objectively.

6 years ago every veteran poster or mod unilaterally said that rebuilds aren't as quick as one thinks. Be careful what you wish for. It will take awhile. Now we have made progress and are no longer tanking but realistically are about 2-3 years away from competing for a spot. Still have to be patient.

Exiting too early from the process might add 2-3 first round exits but won't change the course. But messing up will mean they are in the woefully middle of the league that dooms the team to a rebuild the rebuild. His vision is correct. Most won't want to hear it or admit it but I really could care less about someone crying about not making a push when it isn't functionally a correct move at this point in time. There is more to life than hockey. Pick up a hobby if this is getting to wear you out. Take a step back and invest less time and emotion as well as stress.

They literally competed for a spot until the last day of the regular season just last year.

I agree that it's not yet time to start dumping multiple first round picks. They're still multiple pieces away, not a great team that just needs one final add to get them over the top. But that doesn't mean you don't look for trade opportunities at all. There's logic in saying that the market will be better for trades this summer...but then USE it this summer and improve the team.

There's no guarantee that once the next wave of kids are already on the team, you'll be able to find the right trades. There's no guarantee this summer either, but it's simple due diligence that you keep your eyes open at all times. Don't force it just to make a move, but turn over every rock and if you find the right scenario then pounce.

What do you mean ”2 on the way”? Augustine is 2-4 years away from being a legit NHL option. Cossa 1-2 years away. That is if neither of them stumble/regress at all.

Mrazek is a cheap add for a goalie Cossa can battle with next season. If Cossa isn’t better than Mrazek, he’s not NHL ready.

Cheap add? He is making 4.25 million and is one of the worst goalies in the NHL. Yzerman never should have picked him up.

Last year was a outlier year. Everything went or fell right for them. To move impulsively will give a short term limited gain for quite a bit more pain. Teams are really gonna mess up with the rising cap. You are gonna see stupid deals this offseason for at best role players with the cap going up.

Only after these 6 years do we have the pleasure as fans to see the first four first rounders on the team. The depth picks (3rd round or later) from the first 1-3 years of the Stevie regime are starting to get close.

He has been slowly integrating his picks onto the team when they are ready. His track record in TB was to let prospects play in the minors until usually 22-23 years old before calling them up to the big team. Outside of top 10 picks he has stayed consistent with that approach.

He has a plan. It might not fit the timelines of what fans want but there is a reason we are fans and not professionals. He wont make the irrational emotional move that causes more harm than good for a first round exit.

People want to jump the gun for a first round send off but it doesn't mean much. You miss the playoffs? Tough, if you want continued long term success this is what it takes. Jumping off the path for bad trade deadline deals empties the pool. For 1-2 year's of a vet who wouldn't be cheap to resign. If they even wanted to stay here.

People may not want to hear it but it is, what it is. The team is improving the progress is tangible. But there is still a ways to go and being undisciplined and emotional will cause more damage to the franchise.

He has kept the salary structure of the team set up for when we are able to compete. Pro scouting hasn't been great I am definitely in agreement but I also would bet that we are not a targeted destination for UFA's either. That will come in time as they start to get to the playoffs consistently. Why do you think there is a "Michigan mafia" supposedly? Because some players probably value playing near where they grew up. But aside from Kane who likely wasn't wanted anywhere else because of his surgery (that prior to him was well known as a career killer).

He is ensuring we have roo. to make moves when the players start to consistently compete in the playoffs. Until then we'll welcome to the small market team woes of all pro sports.

Steve Yzerman was 32 until he won his first cup... so, yeah.

I don't disagree there's more building to do. And Yzerman hasn't even scratched the surface of any real 'hockey' trades yet. He's still in stockpiling and drafting mode.
When Larkin finishes his career he will have a half points of what Yzerman has, and Larkin relies on his speed.
You can't compare the 2.

Bigger, lankier goalies require more development time than the Dustin Wolf's of the world.
Yes, when the coaches feel Cossa is ready, he will be up...it is simple as that, SY is ensuring he has at least 2 goalies on the team next year, if the price on one of them is high enough no one can afford to claim him if they send him down to bring up Cossa if he is ready, the wings have an option for #3 in GR. (Not my fav, but still an option)

Given the age of Talbot and Petr, I would expect Cossa to see a fair bit of time between the pipes next year wearing the winged wheel.

I also suspect SY will sign Campbell for another year if he wants to carry on as he is (more a play-coach role).
