Hi guys I was wondering why NHL players spit out water I thought it was weird because of two things, the first is that it wastes water and some people don't have enough water but they just spit it out. Also the second reason is that if they don't actually drink the water and just spit it out then they will stay thirsty and not play very well.
Why do NHL players spit out water then?
It's always something thats bothered me too OP, just not for the same reasons. Yes its wasteful, but I always thought the hygiene factor was a bigger issue. Especially in the fall/winter when you hear about "a bug going around the room" and good teams go on losing streaks because everyone has the flu. Spitting mouthfuls of fluid all over the place spreads germs and undoubtedly leads to some of those illness outbreaks.
Also - the following two posts are correct:
If you drink a bunch of water playing hockey it makes you feel terrible .
Spitting it out does a thing called carb rinsing and is supposed to help your performance without giving you that bloated feeling . I'm sure they were never going to ship the water they spit out to Africa or something anyways .
Drinking cold water can cause stomach cramps during high intensity exercise. Spitting instead rinses the mouth gets rid of the dryness or mucus in the mouthguard while still slightly rehydrating.
When I was in the desert my canteens would get pretty hot - so I got used to drinking hot water. It's quite nice actually, it hydrates you faster and more efficiently because your body doesn't have to waste energy 'heating' up the water to body temp. Plus I never got cramps or felt bloated after chugging hot canteens. Would be interesting to see a team try doing hot water bottles instead or conversely, give everyone red Gatorade and just track the splash patterns and see how gross the bench area looks after they use it as a group spittoon.
