Then after that, Nylander Ehlers and Ritchie were the next tier. So there was a top 8. Virtanen and Fleury were reaches that allowed Nylander Ehlers Ritchie to drop to 8 9 10.

There seems to be some hindsight at play here. Central Scouting had Kapanen ranked the #1 Euro skater over Nylander. They actually had Ehlers way down at #13 in NA. McKenzie’s survey of scouts had it going Ritchie 6, Virtanen 7, Fleury 8, Nylander 9, Ehlers 10. Nearly everyone had one or both of Fleury and Virtanen in their top 10. Those were not reaches, this was one big tier of players who could have gone in any order. McKenzie got it almost perfect except he didn’t have Ritchie sliding to the bottom of the tier.

Nino and strome are par for the course, 5th OA isn't likely to produce a superstar that often and both of them became solid nhlers, which is pretty good, although they didn't accomplish it for the isles. Neither of them ever had realistic superstar potential, they turned out ok. Nino has six 20 goal seasons and Strome has become a 50 pt player, at 5th you can hope to get a star but its much more likely you end up with something like that

Ho sang was a massive boom /bust pick and many people projected him as a star or a guy who would be in Europe in 5 years - the latter were right.

The others are misses, I don't think it's the isles system, you just miss on picks sometimes. Look at NYR or mtl , their track records are just as bad or worse for picking 1st rounders, nyr had 4 top 10 picks in a row including a very hyped #1 OA that didn't live up , it could be situation, on the players, or a combination of both which is likely. They haven't been "good" at drafting but they've been worse at managing assets imo

In the 5th oa for Laf thread i posted the list of the last 10 years 5th OA:

13 - Lindholm
14 - Dal Colle
15 - Hanifin
16 - Juolevi
17 - Pettersson
18 - Hayton
19 - Turcotte
20 - Sanderson
21 - Johnson
22 - Gauthier

Not sure if Turcotte is a certified bust yeat but the 5th OA pick seems like a crapshoot and as we all know the house always wins.

Michael Del Zotto played over 700 games on the back of a hot career start and a cool name with a space

I doubt it. Organizations probably brought him in to get access to his "hook ups"
