He had the GTHL pedigree then the OHL, got drafted fifth overall. Based on his Games Played per year, he didn't seem to have any really bad injury. His size and stick-handling made him seem like a very easy second line center at worst with potential to be an Eric Staal/Ryan Getzlaf.

How did a guy like that become a career Minor Leaguer with under 10 career NHL goals?

Because he sucks?

Too slow, no urgency in his game, no intensity or physicality. Just a big soft skill guy who wasn't skilled enough to overcome his deficit in all those other areas of the game.

One of those cases of a guy who had just enough of those elements to let his skill shine through at the Jrs level...but simply did not have "another gear" to elevate those things to at the NHL level. Fell below the threshold of functional ability in those areas to be any kind of effective player.

It was pretty alarming when Hockey Canada cut him twice from the WJC at 18 and 19. That is pretty much unheard of for a top 5 pick who had hockey Canada experience.

I don't think anyone expected him to end up as bad as he did. But, his game lacked pace. He simply got swallowed up when players got faster and thought the game as quickly as him.

5-6-7 were all disasters that draft. Dal Colle, Jake Virtanen, Haydn Fleury, only the last one is still in the NHL.. and it's in the press box more often than not so not sure for how much longer
8/9 ended up pretty damn good though, and they were in the discussion atleast for 6/7. Dal Colle was pretty close to a consensus #5.

There's some effective NYI scouting!
Dal Colle was rated as a top 5 pick. 2014 was an insanely poor draft in hindsight. It’s funny because at the time, it wasn’t considered to be weak at all.

It’s also funny because they called the 2017 draft the weakest draft since 99 yet it produced Heiskanen, Pettersson, Makar, Robertson, Oettinger, Hischier, Suzuki and 10+ more good players.

yeah it ended up being a pretty solid draft, kinda stealthily if you don't pay close enough attention on first glance... 1 was just disappointing a bit and that 5, 6, 7 group was a disaster, but a lot of good players came out of it and a certified superstar at number 3

I always wondered why he wasn't tried at center. He always had that style of two-way game and had good play anticipation. As a winger, his footspeed was always an issue as a pro.

Most players develop until they are about 22, some develop a bit later and some stop getting better at a younger age (17 or 18).

This is what happens with most 1st round busts. And is probably the case here.
