Why did Juolevi bust?

I’m probably the most hesitant person on this site to put the bust label on someone, but with Juolevi now having been traded away from his drafting team for scraps, and then being waived by the Panthers this morning I don’t think it can be denied any longer.

I know people thought the pick was a bit of a reach, but I never thought there was any issue with it. Seemed like he was tracking as the best D prospect in the draft once Chychrun started to slide so I thought it was a fine pick for Vancouver.

Why did his game fail to pan out in the NHL?

Injuries and lack of commitment, guy just didn’t take it seriously enough in the gym etc. He should have buckled down and became a gym rat.

Simply didn't have the drive and ambition to be a NHL player. When your team scouts can't see this, they should be replaced.
Isn't that what off ice interview are determined to find? Whether to him or with people who work with him, feel like that's on that GM or whoever was in that spot

Whoever was accountable for making such an atrocious call on drafting him, should see the axe.

I still remember his “goal” when he got traded to Florida was fo “spend the whole season in the NHL.” Not only was that unattainable from the talent perspective, but it isn’t a real goal. It’s the result of a goal.

Why are people in this thread talking about his lack of drive and motivation like you know the guy personally? He's been super unlucky with injuries having only played an even 100 games in the last four seasons.

And while things aren't looking great for him he's only 23. Still plenty of time to become an NHLer.

Good stick and puck skills. Very poor skater and therefore finds himself out of position or unable to keep up. Maybe the injuries not too sure how he looked before them

Injuries have held him back but he was picked way too high to begin with. He couldn't have asked for a better situation in his draft year, playing on the top powerplay in the country with Tkachuk, Dvorak, and Marner and the top powerplay at World Juniors with Aho, Laine, and Puljujarvi. This inflated his stats and pulled the wool over peoples' eyes.

Picking Juolevi over Tkachuk was a fireable offence no matter how you slice it. They played on the same team so you would have been scouting the same games. Not a single reputable publication had Juolevi ranked ahead of Tkachuk.

I'm not sure why he was projected to go so high in the first place. I thought Mete was just as good for the Knights at the time and he went in the 4th round. Obviously Juolevi is considerably larger, but he never had anything that made him stand out from the pack, Mete was at least an excellent skater.

Seems like playing with two of the greatest junior lines ever made people think that Juolevi was a great player himself.

Juho Lammiko has already contributed way more to the Canucks than Juolevi was ever going to.
Every single time I saw him play after he was drafted he was awful, and kept getting worse.

What a horrible pick.

His first public interview was just dreadful, he had massive attitude, entitlement issues, He never blamed himself for anything, and on top of that his conditioning was tough as well.
Also some bad injuries did not help
