Why did Genoni never get a chance in NHL?

A) Play in your home country, guaranteed starter, available for your national team at the world championships, 1 million CHF salary (assuming what was posted upthread is correct)

OR

B) Play overseas, a chance at working out and possibly making more money (but not guaranteed), not guaranteed to be a starter, possibility of not being available for your national team

He chose A, and that's what I would choose as well. Although I wouldn't blame anyone who chose B instead.

Yeah I tend to remember reading that when he was younger he did not get that much attention. He is smallish and was bit on Reto Berras shadow. When he got older and had his real breakthrough the already mentioned reasons probably mattered. Once he signed five or six year deal and did not want NHL clause in it.

Imagine if they win gold and Berra is now injured and wont medal. Poor guy. Both him and Genoni have been a Swiss standards for over a decade together with Ambuhl.

Which goalie do the Swiss themselves prefer, Genoni or Berra? Or has that changed from year to year?

Sorry for Berra but I'll have to go with Genoni, I believe he is top 3 all time in this tourney in term of save% which is great

I totally wants him in the net for the olympics

That's something else. Good job Genoni. He deserved a gold medal tonight :/

To me Genoni is the better goalie even at Berra's top.
Hiller had a higher peak and pre-head injury has been the best Swiss goalie. Berra never had the same peak so I will always choose consistency and steadiness

Genoni was great and honestly I did not expect it given the play off performance in the NL this season, but even if there will be a decline next year the goalies are the least of our issues, I'm pretty sure with Charlin, Pasche, Hughes we will have some decent goaltending in future

he makes good money in the Swiss league and the Swiss league while it is getting better, it is nowhere near that of the Swedish and FInnish leagues.

Also, not every European player wants to go to the NHL.
NL blows Liiga out of the water as of this moment – they have by far the best import players (including some top guys from FIN, CZE, even SWE etc.)
