Why can't we score?

Why have we not been scoring very much lately? Is it because of some of the centers we're missing or what? We just can't find the back of the net as much as at the beginning of the season it seems.

Kessel is slumping/nursing, Bolland is out for a while

It's cyclic, it'll come back. I don't think it's anything to worry about in the long-term, nothing has changed with the team

We were bound to go through a tough stretch of scoring. We had a shooting percentage of 15-20% for quite some time in the first 20 games.

We had great chances tonight. Kessel and Phaneuf's chances go in 9 times out of 10. Holtby made key saves.

Lots of players look ready to break out with some goals soon. JVR/Kessel will start clicking again when Bozak is back.

Its because McClement is playing 20mins a game. I love Jay and what he brings, but its almost certain that when he's on the ice your teams not going to score. The games are getting tighter, and scores are being less lopsided, so maybe Jay playing that much is great since he also prevents goals scored.

So, to sum it up its because Jay and the Checkers are getting more ice time and playing more defensive hockey. For example, Jay had more Ice time than JVR and Kessel this game.

I don't feel Holland has hindered or effected the offence from JVR and Kessel. Rather I feel Kessel's "injury" is more at the root of the matter at least with him. It also seems that Lupul and Kadri are slumping but fortunately Clarkson looks as though he is set for a spree.

It doesn't feel like anything to concern ourselves over, Holtby made some quality saves tonight and is a strong goaltender.

Well, when your top 3 centres all go out at the same time, it's safe to say it will effect your line-up, that would explain the dip lately. Tonight we ran into a hot goalie.

Not too much too worry about.

Most of our even strength goals are off the rush, and teams know that. It's easy to go on scoring slumps when we're only dangerous at one front. That's also why we're hearing constantly from Carlyle that we need to work on our cycling, forecheck, etc. so that our team isn't so predictable.

We can't score because our players are too fancy with the puck. What they need to do is get the puck to the net and shoot, shoot, shoot. Far too often, they're trying to score highlight reel goals with fancy passing. They just need to simplify and get more shots on goal with traffic in front of the net.

5v5 TOI tonight(most to least, forwards only):

Lupul, Kadri, Kulemin, Clarkson, McClement, Raymond JvR, Holland,Kessel, McLaren, Smithson, Orr.

Kessel's line played 3rd line minutes tonight. Again. No wonder why we can't score, our best offensive players aren't playing enough.

Offense is down all over NHL.

Olympic year, not many going all out yet and Carlyle is teaching them his more conservative style making harder for opposing teams to get quality shots. Guys like Gardiner aren't roaming free either.

Did Franson play tonight? He seems the guy most likely to be traded right now.

Too many players standing still when making or receiving a pass + not enough jump to get the puck, especially in our own zone.

We had a few chances hit the crossbar/post, or got robbed. It'll pickup again soon.

Also, no Bozak. :sarcasm:

Had a lot of chances tonight. Hit a lot of posts. Holtby was amazing. We'll start to score.

Well to be fair the 3rd line was out there against Ovi who is on the ice for an insane amount of time for a forward so that was a factor.

If you want Kessel out there against Ovi be my guest, I don't think we'd win though

Yeah, team's in a bit of a slump after a hot stretch to start the season. At one point Kessel, Lupul, JVR, Kadri were all in 3-5 games goalless slumps. Clarkson went without a goal for a long time, and we haven't got much in the way of goals scored from our dmen. Plus our top 3 Cs went down with injuries/suspension

Leafs will probably end up going on a hot stretch again when Lupul and Kessel get it going.

Kessel's line has been a 3rd line minutes wise for the past week or so, not just tonight.
