Why are the Sharks in San Jose and not San Francisco?

For the Bay Area SF has the most prestige, money, and access to transit. For a Canadian, I've never heard of San Jose outside of a hockey context. For vacationing San Francisco makes much more sense.

Branding is huge and San Francisco is a much much bigger name than San Jose.

Any chance the Sharks move to San Francisco when the Warriors do?

well i think first is that san jose has a greater population then san fran, at least thats what google told me :)

I am guessing the NHL figured San Fran and Oakland already had enough franchises in other leagues, that giving San Jose a franchise of their own might benefit them as that city can embrace something for themselves

I also think wrestler Dr D David Schultz put it best in regards to San Francisco

Everything you said about SF is true. Great, great city.

However, while San Jose does not have cultural relevance per se, it most certainly has business prestige and money. Tons of both.

And vacationing has minimal to no relevance to a sports market. Besides, it's not that far from SF. Traffic stinks, yes, but still.

Regardless, SJ is a certified successful NHL hockey market so the question is really moot, no disrespect intended.

SJ is the biggest city in the Bay Area and 10th biggest in the country. For whatever reason SF gets all the prestige but SJ has more people and perhaps more money in the South Bay but that's a toss up. Anyways, the NHL is the only league that gave SJ a team of their own to root for which is part of why they have such a strong following in SJ.

Not a chance they move, by the way the Niners just moved closer to San Jose than San Francisco.

They put in the bid. Just as an FYI, San Jose actually has a larger population than San Francisco. Now that doesn't take into account the surrounding areas. But San Jose is a very large place, sometimes referred to as the capital of silicon valley. Not as trendy as San Francisco, but by no means an outpost or a small place by any means.

just saw that san francisco is possibly getting an ahl team soon when they build a stadium and find land to build it on

NHL avoiding direct competition with other sports leagues probably.

Sort of, the other sports are desperately trying to move in that direction anyway. So yes the idea was there, but the A's are fighting tooth and nail to get in that direction. The 49ers are now closer to San Jose than they are to San Francisco.

Great market, if they didn't fubar their TV deal people would have a lot more respect for that organization and their standing within the game in my opinion.

I could be wrong but I thought the bulk of the computer companies(silicon valley) were in San Jose(thus alot of business cash), Oakland was sort of the meat and potatoes of the equation(blue collar jobs) while San Francisco was the tourist/entertainment spot.

That's a laughable opinion. SF is perhaps the prettiest city in the world. San Jose is a fine enough city, but it doesn't even come close.

It would be like the Rangers opting for Brooklyn over Manhattan

Except in population and pure size, SJ>SF

The City can suck it.
South Bay baby.

I think the answer is simple, there are A LOT of tech transplants from NYC and The 128 Belt that moved here over the past 30 years for HP, Apple, IBM, Xerox, Intel, etc. When they moved here they lived between Los Gatos / Morgan Hill and Redwood City (IE just north and south of downtown San Jose).

These people were mostly die hard Bruin and Ranger fans. The Sharks made sense, gave people from back east a team to watch. 20+ years have past and their kids were raised loving this team.

There is no reason to. Ya, San Francisco is obviously the much bigger name to those outside of the region as it is an amazing city and a tourist destination, but its not like San Jose, the biggest city in the bay area is an unknown place in California. San Francisco and Oakland have multiple teams, while San Jose with the higher population and technically more money (per household) has pretty much only the Sharks (until the 49ers came down here anyway). The sharks have a great arena in a good location with a very supportive fan base. Giving this up just to move less than an hour away and try to share an arena with the warriors, or the nightmare that would be trying to build another one, is a terrible idea. Probably not even possible.

Bettman has always been all about southern expansion, so when someone said "San Jose" he approved the expansion immediately. He was furious when he found out it wasn't San Jose, Costa Rica.
