Why are the Penguins struggling?

You can do the same thing with Ovechkin in assists/game. My point is that I really don't see how faulting Crosby for not having a high enough goals/caphit ratio when his goal pace isn't even that bad. He's on pace for like 28, if he's putting up 67 assists over a full season, is that really a problem? He's still on pace for 95 points.

28 goals... yikes.

It doesn't matter how you get in - you'll be facing 3 strong teams no matter what.
Yeah. It's all well and good to have a cushion between you and 9th come April, but when the wild card teams are on pace for 99+ points, it's time to stop putting too much stock in winning a division.

When all is said and done, the 7th and 8th teams in the East might just be the Rangers and Bruins. Yikes.

Another poorly written article by an hfboards partner who did absolutely zero research.

The Penguins had lost only 6 games in regulation in their first 30 games into early December. Since then, have been playing poorly and losing games. Which is also around when they've had many injuries... but according to your argument it can't be injuries because the Pens have won through injuries before... with a completely different coach and much different roster.

You also say James Neal and his lack of leadership is possibly causing a void in the lockeroom (despite his attitude being a big reason he was traded)

Yes, because being top-30 for goals in a season is so bad

Crosby's on pace to have 9 less goals than last year. While that is a big drop, it's not like he's still not elite. He's still has the highest PPG in the league.

Crosby needs to play better change the way he sets up in the offensive zone he back door passes are great when they don't its brutal to watch. Sid needs to be more selfish and play ugly and just shoot the puck and stop over passing

Its player personnel. Team has glaring holes and weaknesses.

Like...

I'm all for saying the Pens roster has weaknesses, but there aren't many glaring holes. We need a physical top-4 D and a winger for Geno, which is what basically every team needs.

Horrific power play, no leadership whatsoever, Fleury reverting back to suck mode, and a general malaise within the entire franchise.

I absolutely hate when people say this. How do you have any idea how Crosby's or Malkin's leadership is? You're not in the locker room.

I don't; it's conjecture on a friggin' message board.

This probably speaks to my spoiled nature as a Penguins' fan and I fully accept condemnation for it, but watching Crosby just isn't all that enthralling anymore. The majority of his career, everytime he touched the puck, I moved towards the edge of my seat expecting something incredible to happen. Now, it's just like watching another ham and egger. His return against Washington was lamentable because after scoring 2 PP goals against Winnipeg by running a basic throw the puck to the net and bang away power play, Crosby's presence prompted the return of the "Every Penguin must touch the puck 3 times before a shot is considered" ethos.

I'm too lazy to do the research, but I wonder what the Penguins' PP ranking would be if the first 10 or some games were eliminated. The Pens must have potted 30 goals in that stretch to remain in the top 7 for so long after such a consistent streak of utter ineptitude.

Simple answer to this question is they are not building the team around their best player. I said it before and I'll say it again......... until they build the team around Malkin, they are not winning squat.

quite frankly I think for a team as talented as Pittsburgh, it's not necessarily a bad thing for them to struggle a bit, if not even mightily for a stretch... when they're a guaranteed lock every year for the playoffs and seem to cruise through regular seasons without much adversity and things become so ho-hum for guys... I think it can bring down the intensity and focus of the team collectively... I don't know if that speaks to coaching or a *lack* of leadership? Either I don't think this is such a bad thing for them.

Maybe this will add some character to the team and help push these guys over the top when the games mean something. It's been waaaay too easy for them the past few years (reg season) and the only thing that matters is playoffs and getting past the first two rounds. When you have Crosby and Malkin as your top 2 centres, a decent enough defense and solid goaltending, one Stanley Cup is absolutely not enough. I think it's been a coaching issue in the past... they should probably try to add another D-man if at all possible, for their stretch run. Should go for Petry out of Edmonton.

Also, while Crosby is still an elite talent... when you're getting paid that much, you DO want to see more goal production IMO.

The absolute last thing the Pens need is another PMD. Well, maybe not last thing. They need a top-6 center even less. But still, no.

Yup, you'll find more competent breakdowns in r/hockey, and that place is a cesspool, which says hilarious things about this joke.

This is also true.

I'm fully on board with Lindrosing the C away from Crosby and giving it to Malkin. The Pens go as he does. Contrary to the almost universal belief, the Penguins go as Malkin goes, it's always been that way.

Their bizarre peenchant for getting inexplicably high injuries probably isn't helping.
