Why are the Coyotes able to have fans at the arena?

Watching game recaps on nhl.com and every arena is empty until I got to a Coyotes home game and was surprised to see fans in the upper levels, although of course they wore masks and there were empty seats apparently to separate people. Does every team get to decide if they will have fans or not, I thought it would be a league mandate not to have any.

It's up to the local health authority.

In Canada these decisions are made at the Provincial level. I think in the States it's decided at the county level.

I believe the state>county>team all have to approve. Arizona has had some of the most slack COVID rules. Cardinals also allowed fans, and allowed the 9ers in.

In Canada I think the feds have probably had a say in it. I don't know but I feel like the Alberta government would prefer to allow some fans.

People are spaced out a good ammount, security making sure people wear masks etc... no reason every team in the league can't have a limited ammount of fans in their barns

Since September, I've been flying a lot. According to the airlines, it's all about ventilation. As all of you probably know, commercial airlines not only recirculate cabin air through HEPA filters but also pull in fresh air from outside, even at high altitude. Delta airlines has been leaving most middle seats open, but on United we were packed in tight as ever, and when the flight attendants passed out the kibble and bits nearly everyone dropped their mask and were fully exposed! Oh...the horror. I have not heard of any mass outbreaks from air travel. If it were happening, I'm sure the evening news would be all over it. Bottom line: If stadiums are well ventilated and adequately filter the air, perhaps arena capacities could be safely increased. I doubt politicians will budge, however; pro sports is not a priority for them.

Nope. They haven't killed enough jobs and small business yet. If you don't work for one of the big corporations growing with all the shut downs, you're in big trouble once the extra unemployment and government checks go away. Would enough people be able to afford to go even if they did open all sports? Maybe the government will increase the debt another couple trillion for entertainment checks. That will solve the problem. :sarcasm:

Same, I've taken 3 trips in mid/late 2020 as travel is part of my work responsibility. Airlines have done a very good job of ensuring traveler safety. The bigger COVID concerns are the number of touchpoints between when you arrive at the airport and when you leave.

I’ve flown a few times since all this started. I came down with Covid on Thanksgiving, most likely from traveling a couple weeks prior to Thanksgiving. No one in my office has had it, no one on my hockey team has had it and I did not pass it to anyone (we’re all maskless), so air travel is most likely the culprit.

Maybe, but it's possible to contract it from asymptomatic carriers.

I believe that could be true. Although we did have an asymptomatic employee in another building, with no spread. Entire thing is odd, as another office has ladies sitting three, maybe four feet from each other and only one person had it - no spread.

That's what I told my friend in Florida when I told him I wasn't coming on the annual ski trip next week to CO. When he mentioned how well airline FA's are faring, my reply was "it's not so much the airlines I'm concerned with, it's all the Arizonans I have to share the airport with"

One factor the media never talks about, perhaps for good reason, is that a good percentage of the population has a pre-existing immunity to covid-19. The studies I've seen put the range between 20-50%.

I've never heard of that, and am trying to figure out how pre-existing immunity can be determined. Can you give a citation to one of those studies? Thanks.
