Why are the Canucks bad?

Poor offence excluding EP.
Poor defence including Hughes.
Poor goaltending.

They are comically soft. They're probably the softest team in the entire NHL, and that's very bad if i'm a canucks fan. they're also the most mediocre team by far, needing the COVID season to go anywhere as of late.

Am I wrong to suggest Jim Rutherford is one of the more overrated GM's ever based on his unexpected cup wins in Pittsburgh?

In Hartford/Carolina he was a GM for a mom and pop owner for two decades allowed to rearrange deck chairs with complete job security and no expectations.

Then he makes a few course correction moves on the Crosby-Malkin era Penguins and suddenly looks like a HHOF who put together this juggernaut when he merely pressed the "on" button again. Leaves Pittsburgh under a cloud of controversy and is now pressing all the wrong buttons in Vancouver in a presidential role.

His current Vancouver tenure kind of reminds me of when Cliff Fletcher was brought in to ruin the Leafs post JFJ. Senior organizational Godzilla. Lob bombs within the organization, stir up controversy and get nothing done. Piss poor work. Vancouver deserves better.

I think this is spot on. He wasn't very good with Carolina but seemingly lasted forever with them. Won 2 division titles because the Southeast was so bad for a while. Won a division title with 86 points which would have put them as the 8th seed, but instead get the 3rd seed.

Their top end guys are overrated and their defensive issues have finally broken Demko.

Most teams have good players, so having a handful of good players is not enough to win in the NHL

Thats a good group of forward.

Miller revert back to normal form.

Roster:

Forwards. Talented group offensively but the combination of forwards is imbalanced. Not enough speed, not enough grit or physicality. Too many players lack compete to win 50/50 puck battles, and don’t commit to the details of strong defensive play.

Top heavy, not enough regular contribution from depth players. Not enough quality 5 v 5 production.

Defence. In terms of a collective group near bottom of the league. Ex-Hughes no dmen performing at a bona fide top 4 level, which is insane considering the amount of cap allocated to this group. Can’t defend in transition, can’t play in their own end, can’t transition the puck, can’t clear net front. Very easy to play against.

The d corps and broader defensive play collectively are why the Canucks are getting these results.

Goaltending. Demko after a few years of playing on his head is having a rough year. Martin is unproven.

Organization:

Ownership. They weren’t willing to rip off the bandaid several years back and embrace a proper rebuild. Most of the issues with the organisation today are attributed to this- bad contracts, poorly constructed roster, insufficient home grown talent and prospect pool.

For a team as bad as the Canucks have been the fact that we haven’t accumulated an above average number of draft picks over the last decade, especially multiple first in particularly bad years is astounding. We should have two or three more quality roster players drafted from 2014 onwards as well as several more in the pipeline if we did it properly.

Absolutely asinine management and meddling, toxic ownership. Made the wrong decision at every turn under Benning and are reaping that they sowed now. Juolevi pick, Virtanen pick, trading McCann and a high 2nd (Kyrou/Hart/Girard were available) for Gudbrabson. Trading away picks constantly because they thought they were building something, allowing a Benning to make the Guenther + for Garland and OEL trade when he was a dead man walking. It’s like they never learned anything because they decided to re-sign Miller coming off a career year when they could have replenished some young talent in one move. The amateur and pro scouting has just been awful especially for defencemen. Haven’t been able to develop a single prospect that wasn’t a sure thing like EP, Hughes & Demko. The AHL team was run by an absolute moron as well until this year. Just ineptitude from the top down, they had people willing to actually rebuild the team (Gillis & then Linden) but ownership has been trying to take shortcuts at every turn leading to moves like Forsling for that ahl Dman we had for a while. The new regime doesn’t seem like they really know what they’re doing either. A decade of futility so far and it looks like we’re in for another 5 years of hurt. Needless to say I’ve gotten way more into football and basketball these last few years.

It is clearly a divided locker room, like the rumours suggested. They have too much talent to be this low in the standings without some other reason.

Offense is #8 in the league, even considering we can’t even get the puck out of our own end. It is the only non playoff team that high. exactly how good does the offense need to be in your opinion?
I'll rephrase, the forwards are not as good as you think they are. forwards have to play both offense and defense. they are strong offensively and absolutely BRUTAL defensively. So yeah, Vancouver's forwrads are not as good as OP thinks they are.

Probably because one of their assistant captains Miller is not very well liked and has been said by many to be a dickhead.

They look stacked with talent. Pettersson, Horvat, Miller, Kuzmenko, Hoglander, Garland, Boeser should make one of the deepest offences in the league. They have their elite #1 D in Hughes. Demko is one of the best goaltenders in the league.

Why do they suck every year?
no idea

Bruce has clearly lost the room--the fact for the last 2 years 80% of the team has been linked to trade rumours has to get into the room sometimes--the constant rumours have started bothering me and questioning what is going on--for awhile there the local beat writers all were giving out trade rumours on a daily basis

Bad defense, terrible contracts, Demko not playing elite, can't outscore their troubles. Apparent "toxic" locker room. Whether or not that's because of Miller I don't know, but his on ice antics can't be helping.

Also awful owner/gm combo, maybe one of the worst in history. The past 10 years have been a very depressing situation and the future looks bleak.

Forwards: Pretty good
Defense: LOL
Goalies: bad, sometimes good
PP: decent
PK: LOL

Pretty much sums it up. Outside of top end talent, there's not much there.
