Why are quality defenseman so scarce?

Same reason that the blind side tackles in football are some of the highest paid players in the NFL.

best skaters as kids want to score goals.. so they play forward.... you pay somewhat for the glory as the defence makes more than you and are harder to find..

goalies are just nuts... (played for decades and still and slightly insane.)
