Why are NHL Jerseys so bland compared to pro Europe leagues

Does it really get better than this?

Best in the world.

And I don't even mind saying it.

However, I think some jerseys could look really great without the ads (take away the engelbert ad and the big red patch on the sleeve):

These ones are okay, but none are really amazing (the Alder Mannheim is the best, but it would look amazing with standard straight stripes like most NHL teams use, and the HIFK would be up there if it dropped the middle white strip). The rest suck.

I think a lot of the European jerseys look terrible. Just haphazardly thrown together and/or cartoonish (not in a good way).

Like another poster in this thread, honestly, ads make some of those jerseys look better.

Because the NHL (thank God) hasn't lost its mind (quite enough) to turn one of the (last) sacred symbols into yet another poor excuse for advertising space.

In this case, less is more. Way more. I wouldn't want my team wearing a piece of trash torn out of yellow pages, thank you.

Should the NHL jerseys ever resemble the Euro ones, I'll walk.
if there are one day so be it. I could honestly care less. not like you wouldn't be able to buy it without the ads. if it helps the league be financially stable why not.

It goes from "trashy and poorly designed" to "oh they're just sellouts" which is an obvious trade deadline upgrade.

Please no, don't give them any ideas. It's bad enough that ads are probably coming in the next few years (NBA is doing it already).

And will we ever see colorful, catching the eye type designs? I am not talking about ads, leave them off, but everything is like one solid color usually, nothing sharp or eye popping.

Would add a lot to the sport IMO, and since it's marketed for kids during games, would probably add enjoyment for them as well.

So as one Leafs fan to another, do I detect a dissatisfaction with the return to a classic design over something more modern (which I take you necessarily infer as being more "colourful")?

The NHL survived the 90s and that very colourful, whimsical approach to sweater design. It simply didn't (and doesn't) translate at the pinnacle of the sport, which is the NHL. There's a market for that type of amateurish aesthetic (e.g. AHL, ECHL, etc). But there's something to be said for simple, elegant, controlled design to convey a sense of gravitas. As any Hawks or Canadiens (or any other Original Six) fan might easily explain.

Looking at brands that excel like, The New York Yankees or Apple (pun somewhat intended) one notices the value of an instantly identifiable logo. Your proposal achieves the opposite, typically.

If anything, why not take those leagues which seem in need of applying the NHL aesthetic to their sweaters, just to see how less can be better than more.

People have different opinions on what looks good.

Some people would prefer to have a high end car with a NASCAR style livery on it, while others would prefer to have just a really nice straight paint job.

Or a nice black suit vs. a tie dye suit.

A nice clean hockey jersey vs. a jersey with crazy ads all over it.

Some people like the clean classy look, less is more type of thing. Others like to see a lot happening and think the other clean looks are boring, while the people that like the cleaner look think the other looks tacky.

The best NHL jerseys are the old classic ones. Chicago, Toronto, Detroit, Boston, Montreal, even Philly.

I think OP are talking about the colors or logos of the more newer teams and jerseys, and I agree with that. Columbus, Atlanta, Nashville, Anaheim, Arizona are all really bad.

Vegas Golden Knights is downright atrocious.

Ok, I kind of agree with this. But that's because they don't seem to want to emulate the traditional jerseys/symbols.

I just love vintage looking graphic design for sports teams. All those teams up there should try it (I think Columbus has) and stick with it.

An ad-less Dynamo Moscow outfit is what I'd like to imagine a tasteful version of Tampa Bay's would look like

Since, however, this is a thread in which virtually all replies have missed the OP saying it's not about ads, I'd say that I disagree anyway. Hockey jerseys resembling 90s football tops in terms of colour and design are bad and incomparable with clean lines and consistent design elements that you see throughout North American hockey.
