Other than schools and govt offices do people really get off for this? It’s a normal work day for me...
Thank you for saying that. Instead of the god awful “new” name they gave it.
How about "All your base are belong to us day", "Invasion day" or "The bible says nature is a smorgasbord day"?Why not Cleveland Day?
In Islanders case, it's apparently just a team tradition, some PR guy said it's a chance for more kids to go to the game, sort of a family afternoon themed thing. It's Columbus and the Islanders always have an afternoon game at home on Columbus Day...no clue why.

Don't know if my nephew has the day off at his school but they're closed here in Newfoundland. Whatever the reason always good to see some hockey.

Americans don’t get paid for federal holidays?I’m an electrician and I’m off today (without pay, though). All the other trades at my jobsite are off today as well (ironworkers, pipefitters, etc...).
It should be Leif Erickson day. Guy came here first before Columbus. Dumbest Holliday.
but columbus plays tmw? It's also Columbus Day in the United States.
well that and a tasteful tweet with some shares fixes everything55 Cities have elected to call it "Indigenous Peoples Day" as opposed to "Columbus Day" here in the States....
eh call it what you want. calling it Indigenous Peoples Day is fine imo. they were here 1st.It's also Columbus Day in the United States.

It is a Federal holiday. I'm a Fed and am quite enjoying the early hockey, MLB playoffs and my Redskins play tonight. Good day.If they work for the federal government, they do.
I don’t think Columbus Day is a “federal” holiday - I think it’s a state holiday. Meaning that some states have it off, and some don’t. Except for two years I lived in Texas, I’ve lived in Massachusetts my whole life and always had it off. It’s not a holiday in Texas, but is in Massachusetts. I called out sick on Columbus Day when I lived in Texas, though
I work for a private contractor, and it’s in my union’s working agreement with said contractor that we have the day off, but without pay. I’m not too miffed about not getting paid, though. The rest of our benefits make up for it.
