Makar's current ppg this season is 1.33. Only defensemen in history who did better in a season are:

Orr (6x)
Coffey (5x)
Potvin (once, in super high scoring 1979-1980, at 1.38 ppg)

He is also on pace for 103 points (in 78 games, would be 109 if full 82 games). If he hits 103 points, the only players in history who wuold have hit higher are:

Orr (5x)
Coffey (4x)

He's putting forth a hell of a resume. Also incredible in playoffs.

Of course - MacKinnon himself is pacing for a historic season. On pace for 140 points. There's a few more players in history who have hit 140 points, but all of them in higher scoring eras, so it could be a historic season too.

This is tough. Both have an argument. I expect all-time Makar will have the better career, but for peak it's close.

Makar was better in the cup season/playoffs and given his age at the time seemed like maybe he should be considered the better player, but MacKinnon has been better since and was the better player beforehand. It’s something that can switch back again, but at this point I consider MacKinnon better (and 2nd best in the league)

Mackinnon has had more dominant peaks where he has been in debate for best player in the world.
So I take him.

Makar was better in 2022, but MacKinnon has surpassed him.

Even last season, MacKinnon was the better player.

It´s very close. Mack this year for sure, but either one can outplay the other in a season.

There is no other D in the league that can replicate Makar´s production season after season so he is more of an unicorn. However, Makar does have an issue with staying healthy. Cale would have an absolutely stacked trophy cabinet if he managed to play full seasons.

I see MacKinnon as a top 5 forward, behind McDavid and in the mix with Draisaitl, Kucherov, and Matthews (though I'd say with an argument to put MacKinnon as more of a clear #2).

Makar I see as the best defenceman in the league.

So I'd give the edge to Makar.

Right now is MacK, cup run was Makar. They trade off a lot. Makar is also dealing with a nagging hip injury. I'm just happy as an Avs fan to have both.

I'd take Makar. MacKinnon has been better the last while but Makar is so unique.

Makar's a top 3 shooter in the NHL (possibly #1), which is crazy for a defenseman, nvm how he creates the space to shoot with his explosive skating.
