Who's Our Top Prospect Now: Brennan Othmann vs Gabe Perreault

Who's our top prospect now?

Went with Othmann. I think he has a chance to be a very unique player at the NHL level. Grit and skill.

We can look at points and also look at impact. Othmann is going to irritate the other team. An in your face player that can roll in your top 6. I see a Callahan/Dubinsky hybrid player with a better shot.

Perrault has a chance of being a huge boom player that the franchise hasn't taken in a long time either (Laf and Kakko are supposed to be All-stars). I see a lot of Kevin Fiala minus the plus speed.

They are 1-2 and the gap isn't that big, but Othmann's game will translate to the NHL easier.

Haven’t seen anyone consider him any more than a good secondary scorer with bite. He’s gotten a ton of hate from the usual suspects (not you.)

Maybe I’m missing the massive hype for him?

Meanwhile we lived through the Krav shit and there were some people who thought Nils made Fox expendable lol.

The only person I remember saying that said that Nils should take over on the PP but he wasn't a Rangers fan.

Imo Othmann currently because he’s been a stand out player in a more competitive league.

Perrault should be able to catch up with him and pass him in a year or two but dominating on that line at that level isn’t quite the same.

Its a good question but its just too early to tell. Give Gilbert 2 years then judge.

So, Othmann who used to be Flint's captain, lead Peterborough to an OHL Championship and just finished willing his team on his back to a Memorial Cup Championship game... won WJC gold how many times? 3?... He was 7th in OHL scoring in 21-22...

But he's overrated?

Perreault just blew away every scoring record for USNTDP. He was the leading scorer on a stacked USNTDP, he's going to BC with a few teammates and they'll have a high chance of winning multiple NCAA titles over the next couple years.

But he can't skate?

Can't we be excited that these two are Rangers prospects?

If Laf and Kakko (still only 22) break out this season like they should if the Rangers aren't idiots and put them in big spots all season. We'll be stacked up front in a couple years.

Cyulle has had a respectable AHL career so far, too.

BMB is looking real good too.

Just need the Rangers to pull their heads out of their asses and stop placating lazy ass vets and get with the times.

If Othmann becomes a 50-60 point top 6 wing who can score 25-30 in a good year and play with an edge, we should all be thrilled. This "Canadian Tkachuk" nickname is fun but not going to help him among our impatient fans who think he needs to be a 90 point player to pay off as the 16th overall pick.

Perreault has a higher ceiling but there are also question marks. How much of his production (Which is all anyone talks about with him) was because he played with Smith and Leonard? Not saying he's comparable to Gropp, but situationally, there are similarities. Can Perreault show his skill and talent away from Will Smith? Because Gropp with and without Barzal was not even in the same universe in terms of performance.

That said, Perreault is a really exciting pick and was a no-brainer at 23. For now, Othmann is still ahead of him because Othmann has already taken steps we expect Perreault to take, but hasn't yet.

I think it's at least an interesting little tidbit that both our 1st rounders under Drury have dual-nationality

Perreault 100% has the higher ceiling. This is like getting a re-do on Cherepanov.

We can talk all about the physical maturation he has yet to undergo but the fact is that it still needs to happen. He’s further away just by virtue of being younger but he also has more road blocks in his way.

Off topic, but your 48 year old sunglasses in the parking lot tweet had me rolling.

Anyway, his point total was inflated playing with who he played with, but can be said about his linemates too. Leonard actually benefited the most production wise imo(and this isn’t a knock on him, I’m a fan of his game.)

Just in case anyone is wondering, i’m going to be away on vacation till the 18th. I plan on starting the prospect polls then. If someone doesnt want to wait they are more than welcome to do them for the summer.

Ive seen Othmann against NHL players in preseason. I havent seen Perreault in that situation. Othmann for now. I think he's going to be a stud. He brings a little less finesse but more jam and compete. I think theyre both going to be legit NHLers.

Ed only thinks in zero-sum lines of thought.

Maybe it's nothing, but there is still a bit of risk about Othmann's supposedly elevated opinion about himself. But I guess this is natural for kids who dominate the lower levels. When they're here, they'll know it's a new ballgame and environment.

Sometimes a little ego is good. When Bossy was drafted he told Bill Torey he would score 50 goals for him next season.

Is it really that bad?
I mean Cuylle/Garand/Othmann/Perrault/Jones (is he still considered?)/Emberson/Sykora/Berard/BMB?
Garand could be a 1G. Othmann and Perrault have top six upside. That’s it.

Only Three players (including one goalie) that have that kind of ceiling is not good

Voted Perreault here.. not new shiny toy syndrome either. Let's dig into it, Othmann played his draft year professionally in the 2nd tier Swiss league and did well. Always get a little bonus points when a prospect can play against adults. Just a decent WJC in his draft year. It's a short tournament, I don't put much into it but just since we're comparing... Perreault put up Jack Hughes / Cole Caufield sort of numbers this season. Outproduced his linemates. Incredible WJC tournament. This isn't the end-all be-all because Isaac Howard led his group as well last year over prominent prospects like Cooley, Nazar, McGroarty, Gauthier, Snuggerud.. all of which were drafted before Howard. Aside from Nazar, who missed most of last year coming off a significant injury, all transitioned nicely to college hockey. Howard was the player that struggled the most, who'll be transferring to Michigan State after a bit of a disappointing season at Minnesota-Duluth. I don't think this'll be the case with Perreault, who I believe is a notch above Howard... just laying out some Bull and Bear cases.

Othmann had a fantastic D+1 season notching 50 goals and nearly 100 points. Had a decent remaining WJC tournaments. His stock maybe takes a little bit of hit this year. Might've taken his foot off the gas a little this season. Traded to a new team which obviously has some challenges, so gets a bit of break there... but still, a drop in 30 points. Grand scheme its not a huge knock. Doesn't change who the guy is as a player but you would've liked to see him in his last OHL season come in and blow the doors off, he'll be fine though. Different player from Perreault but Gabe has more upside, I gotta go with him at the moment.

It's tremendous to have both in the fold though. Othmann will start getting some pro seasoning. Perreault will spend time in a college. In a few years when he starts getting closer there's a possibility that Panarin and Kreider will be gone or almost out the door. Kakko, Lafrenière, Othmann and Perreault have a good chance to make up the future core wingers.
