so what happens when a team has a player selected? do they get to protect another player, or can the expansion team even select multiple players from the same team?

In 2000 each expansion team could select only one player from one franchise.

Thanks. So we'd likely be facing losing a guy like Stralman...although we might also have to move one of our existing 5 D in order to protect McIlrath assuming he would be eligible to be selected.

Usually expansion teams aren't awarded to play the next year. Florida and Anaheim were the fastest teams to play. They had big money behind them. The other teams later in the 1990's had some time to put together an organization. Award the team. Hire the team president. Hire the front office. Hire the coach. Scout the players. Hire the scouts.

You have to protect 9 forwards and 5 defensemen. Losing McIlrath would be unfortunate but without trading Staal/Del Zotto/Girardi it's something you have to do. But if that were the case, I think trading Del Zotto for a forward becomes a priority.

Hm. Wonder if a team looking to hold on to an extra forward would be willing to make a handshake deal to trade us a forward for a D just for the expansion draft and then trade back. Of course that's very risky though.

Hank

Staal
McDonagh
Moore
MDZ
Girardi

Stepan
Hagelin
Brassard
Kreider
Nash
Callahan
Miller
Lindberg
Fast/Hrivik

It all depends on what occurs. If Staal is not re-signed then he should be dealt and they should protect McIlrath.

That's basically my list too, but I would keep Stralzy and take out MDZ. I feel that Zucc would get taken by the expansion team so I would put him in the spot of Fast/Hrivik. Do they even count since they have yet to play in the NHL?

Sounds like collusion and would probably get nailed by Gary

What is the minimum number of NHL games a player has to have played to be eligible for the expansion draft?

The only exemptions last time around were first and second-year pros (NHL, AHL, etc.) and unsigned draft picks. For example, the Devils had to protect Colin White in 2000 despite him not playing an NHL game yet. He played three seasons in the AHL up until that point. For giggles, this is the Rangers list in 2000:
